Volunteers of America Upstate New York Position Title: Overnight Program Safety Officer (Rochester) Department: Facilities Reports To: Director of Facilities Location: VOA Shelters and Permanent Supportive Housing Programs u2013 Upstate New York Employment Type: Full-Time / Overnight Shift / 12pm-8am Position Summary Volunteers of America Upstate New York (VOA Upstate NY) is seeking a dependable and professional Overnight Program Safety Officer to support safe and orderly environments within VOA shelter programs and Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) sites. This position works under the supervision of the Director of Facilities and collaborates closely with program directors and overnight staff. The Overnight Program Safety Officer is responsible for overnight safety monitoring, facility rounds, documentation of incidents, and supporting emergency procedures while promoting a respectful and trauma-informed environment for residents and staff. This role focuses on safety coordination and monitoring within human service environments and is not a security enforcement role. A New York State Security Guard License is not required but highly recommended. Work Schedule + Overnight shift (typically 12:00 AM 8:00am, Wednesday u2013 Sunday + Includes weekends and holidays as required Key Responsibilities Overnight Safety Monitoring + Conduct scheduled safety rounds throughout VOA shelter and PSH facilities. + Monitor common areas, entrances, and building activity during overnight hours. + Maintain awareness of building conditions and resident activity to ensure a safe environment. Shelter and PSH Program Support + Support overnight shelter and housing staff by addressing safety concerns as they arise. + Assist staff in maintaining safe, calm environments for residents. + Provide support during challenging situations through communication and de-escalation techniques. + Promote respectful interactions with residents consistent with trauma-informed care practices. Facility Safety and Monitoring + Monitor building access points and ensure doors and entry systems are functioning properly. + Check safety systems including lighting, fire exits, and emergency pathways. + Identify hazards such as spills, trip hazards, facility damage, or other safety concerns and report them to the Facilities Department. Incident Documentation + Complete incident reports for accidents, safety concerns, or unusual events. + Maintain overnight logs documenting rounds, incidents, and facility concerns. + Communicate important information to program leadership and day-shift staff during shift transitions. Emergency Response Support + Assist with emergency procedures including fire alarms, evacuations, and crisis response. + Contact emergency services when appropriate and follow VOA emergency protocols. + Support staff and residents during emergency or crisis situations. Coordination with Facilities + Report maintenance or safety concerns through established systems such as work orders or facility logs. + Coordinate with Facilities staff regarding urgent overnight issues when necessary. Safety and Compliance + Follow all Volunteers of America Upstate New York policies and procedures. + Participate in required agency training including safety, de-escalation, and incident documentation. + Support compliance with applicable program standards and safety protocols. Qualifications + High School Diploma or equivalent required. + Experience working in human services, shelters, supportive housing, behavioral health programs, or residential environments preferred. + Strong observation, communication, and problem-solving skills. + Ability to remain calm and professional in challenging situations. + Ability to work independently during overnight hours. + Basic computer skills for documentation and incident reporting. Physical Requirements + Ability to conduct routine walking rounds throughout multiple floors or facilities. + Ability to stand or walk for extended periods. + Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Vision requirements for this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. This position will frequently perform activities with machines, chemicals, moving vehicles, ladders, or other hazards.
