The position will focus on laboratory-scale experiments to determine how encapsulation and operational conditions impact the uptake and release of N- and P-storage products from wastewater in mixed and pure cultures. The successful candidate will work on a team with researchers from Northwestern University. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related fields. A strong track record of peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations, the ability to work independently, strong communication skills and excellent problem-solving skills are highly desired. In addition to performing research, responsibilities will include (1) leading the preparation of presentations, manuscripts, project reports and grant proposals; and (2) mentoring undergraduate students. 90% Research Conduct research related to a specific externally funded project, including collecting and analyzing data, troubleshooting challenges, and assisting undergraduate students on the project, as needed. Individually and collaboratively write reports for sponsors and papers to submit to refereed journals. 10% Lab Citizen Attend lab meetings with the entire research group and one-on-one meetings with Professor Novak. Attend relevant lectures, seminars, and training sessions. Maintain the highest safety standards and adhere to University policies. Assist other lab/community members, as needed. This position is not eligible for H-1B visa sponsorship Qualifications Required Qualifications: PhD in Environmental Engineering, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Microbiology, or a closely related field Preferred Qualifications: Strong laboratory skills in environmental microbiology and/or chemistry Strong laboratory skills in reactor design and set-up Experience with microbial culturing, basic analytical methods (COD, N, P, OD600), and molecular biology techniques Ability to work and coordinate with external partners Ability to work independently and troubleshoot problems effectively Demonstrated ability to produce high-quality publications Excellent communication skills, written and verbal About the Department The Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geo- Engineering resides within the College of Science & Engineering.
