Summary VA Connecticut Healthcare System is looking for an Attending Physician in Hospital Medicine in West Haven, CT. The Physician (Hospitalist) position would include an appointment as Yale University Faculty, providing experience in educating residents, medical students and other learners. Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases Paid Time Off: 50-55 days of paid time off per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year and possible 5 day paid absence for CME) Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement) Licensure: 1 full and unrestricted license from any US State or territory CME: Possible $1,000 per year reimbursement (must be full-time with board certification) Malpractice: Free liability protection with tail coverage provided Contract: No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting As an Attending Physician in Hospital Medicine, you will: Provide comprehensive inpatient care for hospitalized Veterans 18 and older, including admission, evaluation, management, and discharge. Core privileges include the ability to perform a history and physical exam, form a differential diagnosis, order and interpret labs and other diagnostic tests such as plain films and ECGs, develop and implement treatment plans, order subspecialty consultations and arrange appropriate follow-up care. Deliver eight months of annual inpatient service coverage within the Hospital Medicine Section in conjunction with Yale Internal Medicine Residents. Note all clinical care in this position involves resident supervision. Ensure safe, timely, and efficient transitions of care in collaboration with interdisciplinary teams. Supervise and teach residents and medical students in accordance with program requirements, which includes dedicated formal teaching time and evaluation of trainee performance. This position comes with a Yale faculty appointment. The position includes on-tour time designated for self-directed scholarly work, which is expected as part of dual VA and Yale appointments. Participate in section meetings, quality improvement initiatives, committee activities, and other efforts that support VA Connecticut's mission. Assist co-attending (a primary care physician or specialist) and his/her/their team with nuances of inpatient care and workflow. Contribute to continuity, stability, and efficiency of inpatient operations through effective clinical decision-making, accurate documentation and communication. Demonstrate continued effort to stay abreast of emerging literature and guidelines. Must be board-certified in Internal Medicine. Respond to utilization management queries in a timely and respectful manner. Recent repeated experience in paracentesis, lumbar puncture and point-of-care ultrasound preferred but not required. Work Schedule: - Primary Schedule: Monday through Friday - Clinical Coverage: Hospital Medicine Physicians follow a block-style clinical schedule that includes assigned weekend duties as part of their inpatient service responsibilities. - Flexibility Requirements: Flexibility is required to meet clinical service needs, including participation in scheduled weekend and holiday rotations. Requirements Conditions of Employment U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
