Job Description

The Department of Genomic Medicine seeks an exceptionally qualified basic/translational science applicant for a research faculty appointment as an Assistant Professor. The successful candidate will independently conduct original research which will enhance the research program of Genomic Medicine. The Assistant Professor, Research Faculty Appointment (RFA), will be responsible for providing expertise in the design, conduct, and analysis of clinical and laboratory research projects, especially in the area of cancer epigenetics and immunology. He/she will independently design and execute the analyses of biomedical research projects in cancer epigenetics and tumor microenvironment. He/she is expected to implement and utilize cutting-edge methodologies in these two areas with a focus on single cell and spatial techniques. He/she will be responsible for preparing manuscripts for peer review, presenting research results at national and international meetings, and also, preparing grant applications to support research. This faculty member will plan, develop, and prepare research projects to further develop and refine his/her area of expertise and to integrate this expertise with others in the Department of Genomic Medicine. He/she will submit research proposals/grants for internal and external funding. He/she will perform other related scientific duties in the scope of the position as required. He/she must be able to work within a context of an intense, fast-paced research environment and establish and maintain professional relationships with peers, physicians, patients, and subordinates. Applicants must hold PhD in a basic science or related field. Preferred PhD in molecular biology, genetics, pathology. Applicants must have two years in a position with similar requirements. The applicants should have experience in grant preparation and a prior record of successful funding for research is desirable. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Administration (10%) u2022 Serves on institutional and hospital committees as requested by attending appropriate meetings. u2022 Listens to deliberations and provides verbal feedback, as necessary. Visually reviews all documents pertaining to committee functions. Education/Teaching (10%) u2022 Provides a balanced and integrated educational program in the design of research projects in related field. u2022 Provides appropriate analytical presentations to medical residents, postdoctoral fellows, and students. u2022 Attends and participates in Division/Department teaching and continuing education conferences, which require clear verbal interaction with colleagues. u2022 Supervises research projects conducted by graduate and undergraduate students. Research (80%) u2022 Actively engages in research and scholarly activity to enhance the academic environment of the Department of Genomic Medicine. u2022 Develops programs in research and scholarly activities in keeping within the goals of the laboratory. o Requires the ability to synthesize a myriad of information pertaining to the field of expertise. o May necessitate (oral or written) instruction to staff and support personnel in protocol design and analysis. o Seeks appropriate funding mechanisms to support clinical and health services research. u00a7 Will require completion of grant application forms through oral dictation or use of a computer/keyboard. u00a7 Will require budget development and analysis. u2022 Requires alertness, awareness of and compliance with health & safety regulations in the laboratory. u2022 Contributes to the literature in field of expertise by publishing original research in peer-reviewed journals. u2022 Represents the Department of Genomic Medicine in local, regional, state, national, and international matters pertaining to the field of expertise. This will require traveling to sites outside of the Houston area and upon return, disseminating the information obtained or learned by sharing with Department colleagues, verbally and/or in writing. u2022 As a principal investigator, he/she will independently design, conduct, analyze, and report on a broad range of biomedical research projects. He/she is also responsible for providing appropriate expertise to other principal investigators in the laboratory and department, in the design and analysis of clinical and laboratory research projects. o Independently designs and conducts original research. o Collaborates with physicians on research protocols incorporating concepts from area of expertise. o Read literature, consults with other investigators in related areas of input and recommendations. o As investigator, he/she must be able to make decisions based on information provided from all sources (from face-to-face meetings, over the telephone and/or by retrieval and reading of medical records and other reports). o Must be able to clearly write and/or clearly communicate verbally person-to-person or over the telephone. o A high level of problem-solving and reasoning skills is required. o Provides as a role model for faculty, fellows, residents, and students. o Provides peer-review for assessing the clinical/research practice of faculty within the laboratory/department. Service Comprises internal activities within MD Anderson and external services activities. External services may be performed either within or in addition to your assigned allocation of effort.
