The Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) is part of the health care team and utilizes her/his knowledge and skills to support and enhance safety, patient experience, communications, and efficiency on nursing units. The HUC, under the direct supervision of the Nurse Manager or Charge Nurse, performs general non-clinical duties and specific services necessary to expedite the efficient functioning of the nursing unit consistent with the philosophy, goals, policies and procedures in the nursing department and OHSU.SAFETY & PATIENT EXPERIENCE- Act to promote a safe environment and Patient and Family Centered Care across the continuum to promote service excellence to foster exceptional experiences for our patientsGreet and screen visitorsUpdate whiteboards and call boardsMaintain census in EpicConduct safety/environment of care surveillanceLabel medication binsPost Fall Risk and Isolation signsPrint wrist bandsManage telemetry boxesFacilitate patient and family experiencesOrient to unit and visitor policiesAssist with communications between patient/family and healthcare team membersProvide way findingActivate MyChart (as requested)Answer and triage call lightsTrack patient belongingsMake post-discharge follow-up appointments (as requested)Support patient and family centered care across the continuum through Service ExcellenceCommunication & Operations- Support operations necessary to meet the needs of the unit.Communicate in a respectful, caring and non-judgmental manner.Facilitate unit communicationsAnswer phonesAssist with pagingMake Nurse call assignmentsManage Vocera wireless communication devicesSchedule hospital transport requestsReport and track equipment requiring maintenanceSend/receive materials in P-tubePlace Equipment Pool ordersResource- Serve as a resource to the unit to expedite the efficient functioning of the unit.Request and track ITG/Facilities work ordersMake staffing calls at the direction of the Charge Nurse or ManagerResolve printer malfunctionsPrint trip-ticketsDeliver mailDemonstrate performance consistent with Departmental, Divisional and Organizational expectations and Core Competencies.Maintain confidentiality and privacy of patient informationPrioritize HUC responsibilities and seek consultation when neededPerform area specific skills and follow established protocolsDemonstrate fiscal accountability and the effective use of resourcesAssume responsibility for professional/job related development, knowledge of advances in technology, use of new equipment and appropriate application of hospital systems; maintain knowledge base essential to the role of the Health Unit CoordinatorHigh School diploma or GED;One year of clerical experience in a health care environment; reads, writes and speaks fluent English; basic knowledge of medical terminology, basic math skills, demonstrated computer skills, demonstrated customer service skills, ability to prioritize and multi-task OREquivalent combination of experience and training that would provide above referenced knowledge, skills and ability.National HUC (Health Unit Coordinator) certification preferredCustomer service related experienceNational Health Unit Coordinator certificationFrequent assignments with tight time frames. Frequent need to prioritize and multitask.Frequent need to sit and answer phones and keyboard for extended periods of time.
