JOB REQUIREMENTS: Operate or tend furnaces, such as gas, oil, coal,electric-arc or electric induction, open-hearth, or oxygen furnaces, tomelt and refine metal before casting or to produce specified types ofsteel. 1) Inspects refractory lining prior to Electric Arc Furnace startup, and in between heats. Applies patch and refractory coatings asneeded. 2) Assures the furnace is charged with the prescribedproportions of scrap, alloys, and other additions. 3) Installs andadjusts carbon electrodes. 4) Starts and regulates electrical controlsto maintain power input to accomplish prescribed rates of melting andtemperature. 5) Utilizes oxygen lance to enhance the meltdown. 6)Monitors slag levels and conditions, adding flux as needed, and removingslag when required. 7) Uses oxygen lance to blowdown carbon levels. 8)Checks temperatures with pyrometers, takes samples with spoon or samplertubes for alloy, analysis and responds to lab feedback accordingly,adding alloy, etc. 9) Operates furnace controls to tap heat into theladle. 10) Injects wire or other additions into the ladle. 11) Takesfinal lab analysis and any other subsequent follow-up samples. 12)Maintains a neat and orderly work station. 13) Reports equipmentmalfunctions to supervisor, and may need to assist in preventativemaintenance of the equipment. 14) Adhere to all Maynard Safetyrules/guidelines, and even general obvious hazardous in their work areawhether or not a specific safety rule or policy exists. 15) Other jobduties as assigned. Drain, transfer, or remove molten metal fromfurnaces, and place it into molds, using hoists, pumps, or ladles. Drawsmelted metal samples from furnaces or kettles for analysis, andcalculate types and amounts of materials needed to ensure that materialsmeet specifications. Kindle fires, and shovel fuel and other materialsinto furnaces or onto conveyors by hand, with hoists, or by directingcrane operators. Observe air and temperature gauges or metal color andfluidity, and turn fuel valves or adjust controls to maintain requiredtemperatures. Operate controls to move or discharge metal workpiecesfrom furnaces. Prepare material to load into furnaces, includingcleaning, crushing, or applying chemicals, by using crushing machines,shovels, rakes, or sprayers. Record production data, and maintainproduction logs. Remove impurities from the surface of molten metal,using strainers. Scrape accumulations of metal oxides from floors,molds, and crucibles, and sift and store them for reclamation. Weighmaterials to be charged into furnaces, using scales. OTHEREXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS: Prior melt shop experience required. Allcandidates must be able to read and write in English to follow specificcompany/customer procedures.
