Job Description

Responsibilities: Primary Manager of Physical Coordination of work on the readying of objects for exhibition; Staff Liaison with Buffalo State University Conservation Department; Works with apprentices, interns, and volunteers to develop their skills in art handling, framing, and care; Lead development of curriculum and directly supervise all individuals who may be handling, framing, or care of works in the collection and/or in an exhibition. Demonstrated expertise in educating teams on preparation and storing, maintaining, and caring for art collections; Provide seminars and training to artists on the proper handling and care of works to protect their artwork as they show it in exhibitions and for sale; Manage the overall care of the Collection including identifying and overseeing repair and preservation work on specific objects in the collection; Continuously assess new techniques and materials used in the industry for framing and protecting works of art on display and in storage. Establish relationships with appropriate Trade Associations. Knowledge of framing techniques, installations, and preservation problem solving; Maintain a strong working knowledge of the framing and matting materials and techniques used by Charles E Burchfield, the artist, on his works so these techniques can be applied to the works in the collection. Specialized knowledge of framing and display techniques of Charles Burchfield; Participate in the development of exhibitions and the installation of works in exhibitions; Act as Lead Designer in creating and installing exhibitions; General Museum and gallery participation. Expertise in the artistic landscape of Western New York, including sculpture, photography, and painting. Requirements: Masters Degree in Fine Arts or related field; 24 months of experience as an Art Preparator and Educator, or Fine Arts related position; Demonstrated expertise in educating teams on preparation and storing, maintaining, and caring for art collections; Knowledge of framing techniques, installations, and preservation problem solving; Specialized knowledge of framing and display techniques unique to Charles Burchfield; Expertise in the artistic landscape of Western New York, including sculpture, photography, and painting.
