The Neurosurgery department at MD Anderson's Cancer Center provides coordinated, comprehensive and optimal care. We are working to eliminate tumors of the brain, spine and skull base through compassionate and expert neurosurgical care, pioneering research, education and outreach. Neurosurgery is dedicated to being a worldwide leader in neurosurgical oncology that revolutionizes patient care. The Neurosurgery APP impacts quality of patient care and patient outcomes throughout the care continuum and are responsible for the clinical management and coordination of care for complex Neurosurgery inpatients and outpatients. The APP is responsible for conducting comprehensive patient history and physicals, developing plans of care, writing orders, scheduling of surgical procedures, securing consents, prescribing medications, patient education, and requesting consultations from multidisciplinary team members to meet patients' multiple needs and requests. The APP is responsible for the timely and efficient detection, documentation, and management of significant changes in the Neurosurgical patient's condition and can meet and verbalize the needs of patients in their demands and experiences of an illness. The APP assists neurosurgeons with procedures such as Gamma Knife stereotactic head frame placement. The APP evaluates and reprograms ventriculoperitoneal shunts, removes sutures and staples, and removes Jackson Pratt drains. The Neurosurgery APP participates in the consenting of Neurosurgery protocol patients, develops standard operating procedures relevant to their practice, and actively participates in institutional initiatives that supports research and quality improvement goals. Participates in professional activities (research, presentations, publications, etc.) and performs other duties, as required. The ideal candidate for the Neurosurgery Advance Practice Provider position will have at least one year of experience, neuro background with a preference for neurosurgery and/or neuro-oncology experience. This is an Inpatient role with a hybrid schedule. We expect the new hire to be onsite for the first three months of orientation. Work Schedule: u2022 Monday-Friday, 6:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m. u2022 There is an opportunity, after a 3-month orientation, to have administrative time that can be done remotely. u2022 No weekends Salary Range: Minimum $117,500.00 - Midpoint $146,500.00 - Maximum $176,500.00 KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Provide quality patient care in relation to the patient's prescribed diagnosis, treatment, age group, development, and other identified needs. Evaluates health status by performing the history, physical, and psychosocial assessment on initial and subsequent visits. Make rounds on assigned inpatients and report findings and test results to attending physicians. Review the findings of the H&P, pertinent laboratory data, radiographic data, plan for further diagnosis and therapeutic management in collaboration with the attending physician. Prevents, minimizes, and manages symptoms/toxicities/health abnormalities related to disease or treatment in collaboration with physician and other health care personnel. Evaluates and modifies plan of care as needed. Prescribe medications. Completes documentation in the medical record in a timely manner. Provides psychological support to patients and families. Provide healthcare throughout the disease process. Facilitates communication between patient/family and interdisciplinary teams. Orders and facilitates consultations, diagnostic test, or procedures in a timely manner. Provides consultation to colleagues and allied personnel, making recommendations regarding treatment. Collaborates with medical, nursing, and other disciplines regarding plan of care, discharge planning, follow-up, and evaluation. Clinical Research Activities Contributes to research efforts of department/section by identifying clinical problems amenable to research methods and initiating or collaborating in research projects. Apply pertinent research to clinical practice. Licensure & Continuing Education Maintains licensure and engages in ongoing education. Keeps oneself current by attending continuing education programs related to the clinical area. Reviews literature related to clinical areas and participated in professional nursing organizations. Communicates advances in nursing practice or healthcare in writing through publication and presentation of scientific papers. Other duties as assigned. EDUCATION Required: Degree requirements as defined by the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) or Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners (TSBPAE) as required for clinical licensure as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant. WORK EXPERIENCE Required: Minimum of one year as an Advanced Practice Provider providing clinical service in an Inpatient setting. Preferred: One year experience as an Advanced Practice Provider role. Prior Oncology, Neurology or Neurosurgery experience. LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS Written authorization from the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) or Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners (TSBPAE) to function as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN or ACNP or ACNPC or ACAGNP or AGACNP or ACNPC-AG or AGACNP or AGNP or ACPNP or ANP or AGNP or AGPCNP or FNP or GNP or PNP or PMHNP or WHNP or APNP) or Physician Assistant. Related authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and patient population. Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification. MAY BE REQUIRED: Authorization for limited prescriptive authority by the Texas Board of Nursing. Preferred Certification: American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS), ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) or PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification as required by patient care area.
