The Utility Maintenance Mechanic I operates various equipment and machinery involved with the installation, repair, and maintenance of the water and wastewater systems. Performs general water meter readings and troubleshoots functions in a pump station. Responds to customer complaints. Ensures pumping stations are functional. Performs related duties as needed. Essential Functions Essential functions include but are not limited to: + Operates and maintains various equipment and machinery by cleaning equipment exterior, performing inspections, monitoring and recording readings, performing preventative maintenance on pumps, conveyors, mixers, tanks, pumps, motors, pipes and other equipment and monitoring equipment for proper operation + Manages property by inspecting facilities for proper operation, maintaining the building and surroundings and ensuring that stations are online and functioning properly. + Performs related duties by attending specialty training classes and maintaining logs. + Performs troubleshooting functions by determining and solving reasons for breakdowns or leaks, responding to fault indicators and determining causes or reasons of mechanical, electrical and electronic or distribution line fault. + Performs repairs by overhauling, removing and replacing worn or damaged parts on equipment, machinery and facilities and installing new machinery and equipment, repairing water service and distribution lines. + Responds to emergencies by removing storm damage debris. Education/Experience Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, and technical processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency. One year of experience in machinery repair or maintenance. Experience as a building helper or apprentice preferred. Additional Information & Requirements Valid Driver's License Work Hours: Monday - Friday; 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Work Location: 1316 Ballentine Blvd., Norfolk, Virginia 23504 This position is designated as an 'Essential' position and you may be required to work extended, rotating, after hours, weekends, and/or holiday shifts in response to emergencies and severe weather. + Regular full-time and permanent part-time employees may receive paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, employer paid pension plan, basic life insurance, voluntary participation in medical and dental, Section 457 deferred compensation, long-term disability, optional life insurance for self, spouse and children, medical and dependent care reimbursement plans, access to membership in credit union and employer provided parking. + Special project/grant employees are generally eligible for the same benefits of regular full-time employees; however, retirement, life insurance and participation in health plans vary depending upon funding and authorization. + Temporary/seasonal and part-time employees are generally only eligible for employer provided parking and access to membership in credit union. + Retirement If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction. If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit.
