Job Description

The Department of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering (ChemBE) at Johns Hopkins University invites applications for a full-time Professor of Practice in Product Design. This position will provide leadership in product design education across the Undergraduate (UG) and Master of Science in Engineering (MSE) programs, while strengthening the department's engagement with industry partners. This is a non-tenure-track, practice-focused faculty position designed for an experienced industry professional with deep expertise in product development, design strategy, and industry collaboration. Primary Responsibilities 1. Product Design Curriculum Leadership - Serve as lead instructor for the ChemBE Product Design course - Oversee and evolve the broader Product Design program for UG and MSE students - Develop and refine curriculum integrating human-centered design, systems thinking, product development processes, market analysis, and commercialization considerations - Ensure alignment with departmental learning objectives and accreditation standards (as applicable) 2. Teaching & Mentorship - Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in product design - Mentor student project teams, including capstone and design-focused experiences - Provide structured design critique and professional development guidance - Support students in translating technical expertise into viable, impactful products 3. Industry Relations & External Engagement - Serve as a liaison between ChemBE and industry partners - Develop and maintain relationships with companies aligned with ChemBE focus areas - Cultivate sponsored student projects, advisory input, guest lecturers, internships, and hiring pipelines - Strengthen the department's visibility within relevant professional communities 4. MSE Co-op Program Involvement - Collaborate with departmental leadership to expand and enhance the MSE co-op program - Identify and develop co-op partnerships - Support placement and assessment of students - Ensure academic integration between co-op experiences and classroom learning - Provide industry-informed guidance on professional readiness 5. Program Development & Service - Contribute to strategic growth of design-oriented education within ChemBE - Participate in faculty meetings and departmental service - Collaborate with faculty to integrate product design into broader curricular initiatives Required - Significant professional experience in product design, product development, or innovation leadership - Demonstrated experience bringing products from concept to implementation - Experience working in cross-functional industry environments - Commitment to high-quality teaching and student mentorship - Master's degree or higher in engineering, design, or a related field Preferred - Experience teaching at the university level - Experience mentoring interdisciplinary student teams - Background in biotechnology, healthcare, sustainability, materials, or related ChemBE-relevant industries - Experience building and sustaining industry partnerships - Familiarity with cooperative education or experiential learning models Salary: $125,000 - $250,000 per year Submit resume, references and list any teaching experience if available Salary Range The referenced salary range represents the minimum and maximum salaries for this position and is based on Johns Hopkins University's good faith belief at the time of posting. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range.
