It is not necessary to apply both through Work In Texas and CAPPS Career SectionGENERAL DESCRIPTIONThe Consumer Protection Division of the Office of the Attorney General, an agency of the State of Texas, seeks a law school graduate for a highly competitive position. This position is intended for attorneys or individuals who will be taking or have recently taken the Texas state bar exam. Work involves researching, analyzing, investigating and reviewing legal documents and information in deceptive trade practice and other civil matters. The Consumer Protection Division works to protect Texas consumers and the legitimate business community by accepting complaints, conducting investigations, filing civil lawsuits in the public interest to enforce state and federal consumer protection laws, and educating Texans on how to spot and avoid possible scams. The Division has regional offices in Austin, San Antonio, Dallas, El Paso, and Houston.The OAG is a dynamic state agency with over 4,000 employees throughout the State of Texas. OAG employees enjoy excellent benefits (along with tremendous opportunities to do important work at a large, dynamic state agency making a positive difference in the lives of Texans.ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONSCollects, compiles, and analyzes documents and informationAssists with planning, developing, coordinating, and administering research projectsCoordinates, assembles, and prepares evidence, exhibits, and documents for use in legal proceedingsResearches and analyzes legal sources such as statutes, case law, administrative records, opinions, articles, treaties, property titles, and rules and regulationsPrepares, reviews, and edits pleadings, motions, briefs, abstracts, petitions, summary judgments, legal correspondence, and other legal documentsInteracts with potential witnesses and representatives of other state agencies as directedMay review cases for jurisdictional deficiencies and procedural complianceMay assist division staff in conducting pre-suit investigationsMay assist other attorneys in providing legal advice, counsel, and assistancePerforms related work as assignedMaintains relevant knowledge necessary to perform essential job functionsAttends work regularly in compliance with agreed-upon work scheduleEnsures security and confidentiality of sensitive and/or protected informationComplies with all agency policies and procedures, including those pertaining to ethics and integrityQualifications: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSEducation: Graduation from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctor degree (J.D.)Must have a license to practice law in Texas by November 30, 2026.Must be in good standing with the State Bar of Texas. (Once license is obtained, selected candidate will be reclassified to Assistant Attorney General I.)Knowledge of legal principles, practices, and proceedingsSkill in using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problemsSkill in handling multiple tasks, prioritizing, and meeting deadlinesSkill in effective oral and written communicationSkill in exercising sound judgment and effective decision makingAbility to prepare legal documentsAbility to interpret and apply laws, rules, and regulationsAbility to receive and respond positively to constructive feedbackAbility to work cooperatively with others in a professional office environmentAbility to provide excellent customer serviceAbility to work in person at assigned OAG work location, perform all assigned tasks at designa ed OAG work space within OAG work location, and perform in-person work with coworkers (e.g., collaborating, training, mentoring) for the entirety of every work week (unless on approved leave)Ability to arrange for personal transportation for business-related travelAbility to work more than 40 hours as needed and in compliance with the FLSAAbility to lift and relocate 30 lbs.Ability to travel (including overnight travel) up to 5%PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONSExperience: Using electronic document review platforms including Relativity and programs such as Excel, Microsoft Outlook, Adobe Acrobat, and WordPrevious experience in legal workTO APPLYTo apply for a job with the OAG, electronic applications can be submitted through CAPPS Recruit.
