Practitioner-in-Residence for a Small Business Clinic

Maryland Carey Law seeks a Practitioner-in-Residence for a Small Business Clinic (SBC). This is a one-year, non-tenure track, 12-month visiting assistant professor appointment from July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027. The SBC will launch July 1, 2026, and it will first be offered as a clinical course in the Spring 2027 semester. The SBC will provide business legal advisory services to small businesses and entrepreneurs in local underserved communities. Over the academic year, the Practitioner will provide business legal advisory services to small businesses and entrepreneurs in underserved communities and will teach a cohort of six clinical law students. The instruction component will include weekly clinical seminars, supervising studentsu2019 legal work, and weekly supervision meetings with students. Clinical Law Program:Maryland Carey Lawu2019s program is one of the regionu2019s largest providers of pro bono legal services. Each year 20 expert clinical law professors and practitioners lead over 150 students in providing 75,000 hours of free legal information, advice, representation, and advocacy to individuals and families with a wide range of civil and criminal legal issues. Established over 50 years ago, the Clinical Law Program is a pioneer in the integration of theory and practice, reflecting the Law Schoolu2019s commitment to public service lawyering, to serving the legal needs of residents and communities in Baltimore and throughout the State of Maryland, and to increasing access to justice. Practitioner-in-Residence Responsibilities:The successful applicant will be responsible for providing business legal advisory services to small businesses and entrepreneurs in underserved communities. The clinic is funded through a Small Business Opportunity Legal Initiative grant from TEDCO that focuses on equipping small businesses with the knowledge required to ensure proper corporate structure, understand and draft basic business and employment contracts, and protect intellectual property, while preparing each business for capital acquisition and financial growth. (The Small Business Clinic will collaborate with the law schoolu2019s Intellectual Property & Technology Clinic on patent, trademark, and copyright work.) The services offered to clients may include: u00b7 Corporate formation and compliance; u00b7 Business plan development; u00b7 Assistance with contracts, licenses and permits; u00b7 Drafting bylaws and other governance agreements; u00b7 Employment matters (e.g., drafting or updating employee handbooks, assistance with severance agreements); u00b7 Counsel to boards and staff about their legal duties and best practices; and u00b7 Drafting and reviewing leases or other contracts. In addition to providing legal services, the Practitioner will ensure that expenses, client engagements and other metrics are tracked as required by the funder. Teaching:In the Spring 2027 semester, the Practitioner will continue to represent small business clients through the SBC, with a cohort of six clinical law students who will be certified to practice law as student attorneys pursuant to Maryland Rule 19-220, under the practitioneru2019s supervision The Practitioner will teach a weekly seminar that will provide the necessary substantive law and lawyering skills the students need to represent small business clients. . The Practitioner will meet with students in weekly supervision meetings to oversee case work and reflect on the studentsu2019 development. In all aspects, the Practitioner will supervise the studentsu2019 legal work on behalf of small businesses. (Both the Practitioner and the clinical law students will be covered by the law schoolu2019s malpractice insurance.) Law school campus: Maryland Carey Law is advantageously located in downtown Baltimore near multiple courthouses, government agencies, prominent law and financial firms, nonprofit organizations, major-league sports facilities, theaters and fine arts. The law school campus also is easily accessible within the greater Washington DC-Baltimore metropolitan region, close to I-95 and only 40 minutes from Washington by Amtrak or commuter rail. Minimum Qualifications: u00b7 J.D. from an ABA accredited school. Must be barred in Marylandand be in good standing. u00b7 Five to fifteen years of experience in the practice of business law. _Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:_ Working knowledge of and experience with business law. Demonstrated excellence in oral and written communications, lawyering, and interpersonal skills. Experience or interest in teaching and working with law students in experiential learning settings. Ability to handle multiple ongoing tasks, including time and task management, establishment of deadlines, and prioritization of responsibilities. This is a full-time one-year appointment with no renewal. This position is in-person in Baltimore, with the opportunity for remote work consistent with University policies and subject to approval of supervisors.
