Assesses inmates for medical emergencies, prioritizes care, and provides emergency first aid. Determines the need for healthcare provider attention and schedules medical visits as needed. Consults with medical providers on healthcare issues for direction and treatment plans. Reviews and screens all written medical requests daily, making appropriate referrals for non-emergent illnesses and injuries. Coordinates examinations for inmates reporting for sick call, gathers information, assesses vital signs, and documents in inmate medical records. Schedules physician, dental, mental health, and obstetrics services as needed, and arranges patient referrals to specialty physicians or hospital visits. Other duties as assigned. Performs initial health intake data collection, including medical and mental health conditions, communicable diseases, current medications, mental status, and substance use for new inmates. Arranges for radiology and lab services, draws blood, obtains specimens, and prepares for transport as ordered by physicians. Performs tuberculosis skin testing and maintains results in inmate medical records. Provides wound care, applies and changes bandages/dressings according to physician orders or protocol. Administers medications to inmates and dispenses over-the-counter medications per protocols.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:• Mental and emotional stability, demonstrating a courteous and calm approach to all contacts with patients, visitors, and health care team members.
