JOB REQUIREMENTS: Are you mechanically inclined and looking to join agreat team? Are you interested in working on a wide variety of vehiclesand equipment? The City of Green Bay has an exciting opportunity foryou The Department of Public Works is seeking a Mechanic to performwork of moderate difficulty in the repair and maintenance of all PublicWorks and other City department equipment. The successful candidate willpossess knowledge of standard practices, equipment, tools, hazards, andsafety precautions of the trade as well as computer and technical skillsincluding using diagnostic equipment and engine/transmission programs.The successful candidate will also be self-directed and possess strongproject management skills. Examples of Duties: -Performs full range ofmechanical maintenance and repair of all Public Works and other Citydepartment equipment as assigned, including, but not limited to overhaulwork on autos, trucks, graders, tractors and other off-road equipment,replacing and recharging batteries, tuning engines and repairingstarters, generators, tires, etc. -Operates all Public Works equipmentand electronic test equipment such as PDA's, hand-held test equipment,portable computers, desktop computers, and self-test equipment.-Performs welding and fabricating duties. -Performs PreventiveMaintenance (PM) Inspections and oil and lube inspections. Performsequipment chassis lubrications, and drains and fills gear drivecomponents at required maintenance intervals. Replaces filters onvehicles and equipment as specified in the PM Inspections. Inspectsequipment and determines if equipment is safe to operate or is in needof repairs. -Repairs hydraulic, electrical and fuel injected systems andhydraulic cylinders. -Calibrates, downloads, and effectively operatescomputerized equipment. -Performs general shop and tool maintenance.-Works with the Parts Clerk to order parts and materials needed forrepair work as needed. Conducts warranty repairs as needed. -Serves asbackup to the Mechanic Foreperson. Trains employees as needed. -Performsother duties as assigned. OTHER EXPERIENCE ANDQUALIFICATIONS: -One year experience in medium-heavy truck and off-roadequipment. -Previous experience in commercial welding/fabrication and/orcertification desirable. -Valid driver's license and good drivingrecord, and CDL endorsement or the ability to obtain within 6 months ofhire. A combination of equivalent experience and/or education may beconsidered. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: -Considerable knowledge ofstandard practices, equipment, tools, hazards and safety precautions ofthe trade. Considerable knowledge of principles of gasoline and dieselengines, and welding techniques. Considerable knowledge of hydraulicpower systems, fuel injection and chassis electrical and enginemanagement systems. -Knowledge of oiling, lubrication and fluid systemson heavy and light equipment and vehicles operated by the department.Knowledge in Preventive Maintenance Inspections and the ability torecognize worn parts and necessary repairs. Knowledge of welding onvarious metals and the preparation of metals for welding. -Skill inreading and interpreting hydraulic schematics, electrical wiringdiagrams, service manuals and other reference materials; diagnosingdefective equipment; performing complete engine, transmission andrelated vehicle component overhauls; including heavy duty automatic andmanual transmissions. -Ability to install, repair and maintainspecialized parts, including necessary component overhauls and fieldrepairs. Ability to operate equipment for maintenance andtrouble-shooting activities. Ability to operate all Public Worksequipment and electronic test equipment. Ability to proficiently utilizea computer and the required software. Ability to follow oral and writteninstructions. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and inwriting Ability to establish and maintain effective workingrelationships with staff and the public. Ability to work the requiredhours of the position. -May be required to demonstrate minimumcompetency by successfully passing approved tests. Physical RequirementsAbility to perform the following activities: -Lifting and carrying 20-50pounds routinely -Lifting and carrying 50-100 pounds occasionally.-Frequent standing, walking, sitting, kneeling, bending, and stooping.-Occasional crawling. -Ability to focus on projects for long periods oftime. -Ability to reach, climb ladders, apply leverage from unusualpositions and work on creeper under vehicles. -Ability to work in variedenvironmental conditions.
