Lewis and Clark County Sheriff's Office is hiring Detention Officers to work in the newly remodeled jail. Shifts are 7am to 7pm and 7pm to 7am. Detention Officers are responsible for ensuring safe and smooth operations of the jail. This includes supervising and monitoring incarcerated individuals, transporting, and overseeing the daily activities of the individuals. Must possess a high school diploma or GED equivalency, be able to successfully pass a criminal background investigation and a thorough background check and successfully complete one hundred sixty (160) hours of P.O.S.T certified Correction/Detention officer basic course and maintain certification. Position Description SummaryUnder general supervision of the Detention Captain, this position performs duties related to incarcerating and caring for prisoners.Essential Functions u2022Completes booking forms; u2022Takes inked fingerprint impressions and identification photographs; u2022Completes disposition records, medical records, prescription drug records, property records and inventories, and court records; u2022Conducts inmate searches; u2022Conducts fire, safety and sanitation inspections; u2022Maintains continuous supervision and surveillance over detention center activities (i.e., work crews, security risk prisoners, etc.); u2022Receives and reports inmate complaints; u2022Supervises prisoners and visitors; u2022Supervises prisoner phone calls; u2022Provides meals and commissary for inmates;u2022Performs other duties as assigned. Other Dutiesu2022Assists clerical staff in duties related to receiving and processing of police records; u2022Assists with processing warrants and civil papers; u2022May escort prisoners to locations within and outside of detention facility; u2022May transport prisoners. Special Requirements u2022Able to successfully complete one hundred sixty (160) hours of P.O.S.T. certified Correction/Detention officer basic course and maintain certification. u2022Able to obtain a valid Montana driversu2019 license within (30) thirty days of hire. u2022Reside within Lewis and Clark County for the first year of employment. u2022Successfully pass a criminal background investigation and a thorough background check. u2022Be of good moral character as determined by a thorough background check.u2022Be a citizen of the United States or Resident Alien. u2022Be at least 18 years of age. u2022Be a high school graduate or have been issued an equivalency certificate by the Superintendent of Public Instruction, or by an appropriate issuing agency of another state or of the federal government.Examples of Knowledge u2022Knowledge of Montana Code Annotated, Detention Center orders, Detention Center policies and procedures, and Lewis and Clark County Policies; u2022Public safety and liability responsibilities; u2022Detention practices and procedures; u2022Legal and court procedures; u2022Constitutional and civil rights; u2022CJIN/NCIC policies, practices and procedures.Examples of Skills and Abilities u2022Operate computer systems and related software, including word processing and spreadsheet programs; u2022Access and use CJIN/NCIC systems according to prescribed standards and regulations; u2022Use office equipment; u2022Use detention tools according to prescribed standards; u2022Understand and apply rules, regulations, and policies according to office standards; u2022Observe prescribed radio codes and protocols; u2022Prepare written reports according to prescribed standards; u2022Maintain records according to prescribed standards; u2022Communicate effectively orally and in writing; u2022Establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, supervisors, prisoners, community representatives, and citizens.Physical DemandsDuties are generally performed in an environment where some hazards and discomforts are inherent to the position. There is occasional activity that exposes incumbent to full range of physical demands and environmental conditions. Requires standing, walking and sitting for extended periods of time. May be required to physically lift/carry/restrain inmates. Must be prepared in self-defense techniques and qualified in the use of OC spray, Taser, CPR and Basic First Aid. Must be able to move or lift documents and materials weighing up to 30 pounds with occasional need to lift or move materials up to or in excess of 100 pounds. Qualifications The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this position are typically acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school. Associates degree in Criminal Justice, Criminology, or related preferred. Must be able to successfully complete one hundred sixty (160) hours of P.O.S.T. certified Correction/Detention officer basic course.
