Engineer 3 - NDOT Print ( Apply ufeff Engineer 3 - NDOT Salary $115,478.00 - $147,235.00 Annually Location Nashville, TN Job Type Full-Time Civil Service Job Number 26232E Division Nashville Department of Transportation Department NDOT GSD Traffic Signal Maint Opening Date 04/06/2026 Closing Date 4/16/2026 11:59 PM Central + Description + Benefits + Questions Position Description The Engineer 3 (Field Traffic Engineer) position serves as a senior technical resource within the NDOT Traffic Engineering division and collaborates closely with signal technicians, engineering staff, contractors, and partner agencies to support the effective operation of Nashvilleu2019s traffic signal network. In this position, the incumbent will routinely work in the field to monitor and analyze traffic concerns around the city and make improvements. They will also work closely with NDOTu2019s Traffic Management Center addressing traffic problems in real time. The Field Traffic Engineer will receive directions from the Chief Traffic Engineer. Performs other related duties as assigned. The Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure delivers a range of services, and the nearly 400 employees work around the clock to ensure a multimodal system that offers choice and better connects neighborhoods, residents, businesses and visitors to the place that they need and want to go to in a safe manner. These employees are responsible for over 2,200 miles of public roadways and rights-of-way, over 6,000 streets, over 300 bridges, 835 traffic signals and over 1,200 miles of bike/sidewalk lanes and much more. Big events in Nashville consist of CMA Festival, Stanley Cup Finals, Titans games, and any number of special events. These require big preparation and big clean-up, and the Nashville Department of Transportation employees are up for the challenge. Typical Duties + Develops, implements, and evaluates traffic signal timing plans, including isolated intersections, coordinated corridors, school zones, and special event operations. + Leads corridor-wide signal retiming initiatives using field observations, travel time studies, and operational performance measures. + Supports real-time operational adjustments during special events and emergency situations. + Coordinates with other departments and State agencies on matters related to departmental services and programs. + Provides engineering guidance and technical support for signal technicians. + Assist in diagnosing and resolving complex signal system issues in partnership with technical staff. + Participate in field verification and acceptance testing of new signal systems. + Assists in preparing cost estimates, scopes of work, and technical specifications for signal-related improvements. + Evaluates intersection performance and recommends operational safety countermeasures. + Ensures signal timing incorporates pedestrian intervals, bicycle accommodations, transit coordination, and school zone requirements. + Maintains accurate timing records and supports asset management documentation. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited college or university and eight (8) years of verifiable and progressively responsible post degree traffic engineering experience, including four (4) years as a licensed Professional Engineer. OR Professional Engineering License and eight (8) years of traffic engineering experience, including two (2) years as a professional engineer. Licenses Required: Valid Driver License A Professional Engineering License from any state is required to apply for this position; however, the Tennessee Professional Engineering License must be obtained prior to completion of the probationary period.
