Medical Laboratory Scientist Job Description This role performs moderate to highly complex clinical laboratory testing in a central laboratory setting, using automated equipment and specialized processes to provide accurate and timely diagnostic results. The Medical Laboratory Scientist supports a laboratory information system (LIMS) migration project while ensuring strict adherence to laboratory procedures, quality standards, and regulatory requirements in a fast-paced, Level 1 Trauma Center environment. Responsibilities + Perform moderate to highly complex clinical laboratory testing under general supervision across hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, blood bank, and microbiology benches as assigned. + Use automated equipment and specialized laboratory processes to perform diagnostic testing, ensuring accurate interpretation and reporting of results. + Identify, verify, and appropriately document abnormal, unusual, and critical test results, and communicate these findings according to established protocols. + Follow all established laboratory procedures and processes, including patient identification, specimen collection, handling, and processing. + Enter and verify patient and test data accurately in the laboratory information system and/or patient result logs in accordance with training and protocol. + Perform and monitor quality control processes to ensure the accuracy, precision, and reliability of test results. + Establish and maintain quality assurance and record-keeping systems in alignment with standard operating procedures and regulatory requirements. + Participate in quality improvement programs to enhance laboratory performance, workflow efficiency, and overall test validity. + Perform calibration, routine maintenance, and performance checks on laboratory instrumentation according to standard operating procedures. + Contribute to the preparation, evaluation, and optimization of maintenance schedules and operating procedures for new laboratory instrumentation. + Draft and update technical procedures and documentation for laboratory methods and instrumentation in accordance with regulatory protocols. + Troubleshoot issues related to instrumentation, reagents, inventory, and patient samples as they arise, evaluating methods and implementing effective solutions. + Collaborate with laboratory colleagues and leadership to support a successful LIMS migration, including adapting workflows and ensuring accurate data entry and result reporting during the transition. + Maintain a clean, organized, and safe laboratory work area, following all safety guidelines and regulatory standards. Requirements + Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or Medical Laboratory Science. + Current certification as a Medical Technologist MT (ASCP), Clinical Laboratory Scientist CLS (NCA), or Medical Laboratory Scientist MLS (ASCP). + Completion of a CLS/MLS/MT training program. Additional Skills & Qualifications + 6+ months of experience in a CLIA or COLA certified laboratory strongly preferred. + Previous experience in a hospital or Level 1 Trauma Center environment, ideally with microbiology bench work. + Familiarity with multiple laboratory benches, including chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, blood bank, and microbiology. + Experience working within a large, reputable health system or complex healthcare setting. + Ability to adapt to new systems and processes, including participation in LIMS migration or similar technology transitions. + Strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams. + Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning, internal mobility, and professional growth within a health system. Work Environment M-F, 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, with every other weekend and scheduled holidays included in the rotation. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Minneapolis, MN. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $36.00 - $45.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
