The University of Miami, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, has an exciting full time opportunity for an Ophthalmic Technician 2 (OT2) in Miami, Florida. The Ophthalmic Technician 2 (OT2) is proficient in the theory, principles, and practice of eye care. This position performs appropriate clinical testing in compliance with department standards and documents in the EMR system. JOB FUNCTIONS1. Performs and documents the following items in the electronic medical record. + Reason for visit + Tangent screen visual fields + Chief complaint + Basic ocular motility + History of present illness + Pupillary evaluation + Basic review of systems + Ocular surface assessment + Review systemic and ocular medications + Eye drop administration + Record allergies + Intraocular pressure such as Goldman, Tono-Pen, and I-Care + Pharmacy information + Pachymetry + Family, social, medical, and ocular history + Insertion and removal of hard & soft contact lenses + Visual acuity at distance and near + Color vision test + Lensometry + Stereopsis test + Manual refraction + Sensorimotor exam + Confrontational fields + Automated & manual perimetry + Humphrey visual fields + Virtual Reality (VR) visual fields + Provides support to providers which includes documentation in patient charts as required and directed for patient care. + Provides patient-centric care. + Adheres to University of Miami policies, standards, values, and required training. + Complies with regulations and maintains patient confidentiality. + Follows best practices of patient safety, hand hygiene, and infection control. + Attends educational courses for ophthalmic personnel when assigned. + Demonstrates high quality of work through accuracy, timeliness, professionalism, and thoroughness. + Meets daily productivity goals. + Maintains JCAHPO certifications. + Ensures all equipment is calibrated and instrumentation is in proper working order. + Participates in assigned clinical research and maintains required certifications. + Organizes and stocks rooms for daily clinical activities. + Travels to satellite eye centers when necessary. + Works evenings and weekends as needed. + Performs organizational duties as assigned. + Completes IVI (intravitreal injection) prep for patients. + Facilitates motility exams. + Supports Virtual Care encounters and exams. + Performs imaging including but not limited to fundus photos, OCTs, and Slit Lamp exams. + Assists with training and onboarding clinical support staff. + Acts as a super-user for technology implementations, optimizations, and training initiatives. + Acts as preceptor and trainer for team members. + Serves as a lead technician providing oversight to clinical teams when assigned. QUALIFICATIONSEducation:High School diploma or equivalent Required Certification and Licensing:Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) Experience:2 years of relevant experience Knowledge, Skill, and Attitudes:u2022 Works well with patients of all age groups.u2022 Presents with a professional appearance.u2022 Communicates effectively, both verbally and in writing.u2022 Demonstrates outstanding interpersonal skills.u2022 Analyzes, organizes, prioritizes, and meets deadlines in a fast-paced environment.u2022 Completes assignments accurately and with attention to detail.u2022 Seeks instruction in areas that require additional knowledge.u2022 Works independently and in a collaborative environment.u2022 Displays intermediate knowledge of ocular anatomy, function, and motility.u2022 Exhibits ability to perform the appropriate patient workup using EMR telehealth platform.u2022 Demonstrates competency in all ophthalmic subspecialty patient workups.u2022 Prepares patients for intravitreal injections.u2022 Ability to function as an ophthalmic scribe.u2022 Proficient in Microsoft Office Department Addendum Clinical: + Preforms all refractive evaluations including: + Documenting patientsu2019 medical history + Test patientsu2019 visual acuity + Depth perception + Color perception + Conduct a Retinoscopy Refraction, manifest and cycloplegic + Perform tonometry and slit lamp assessments + Measures intraocular pressure of eyes + Measures axial length of eye using ultrasound equipment + Performs other tests and measurements as requested by physician i.e., PAM, Topography + Applies drops to anesthetize, dilate or medicate eyes + Educate patient on cataract and cataract elective procedures + Collaborates on refractive clinical flow with administrative team and providers + Educate patients on pre- and post-operative instructions + Preform specialized imaging tests for patients + Order and maintain clinical supplies The University of Miami offers competitive salaries and a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, tuition remission and more.
