Job Description

Under the direction of the Associate Director of Recreational Aquatics, the Swim Instructor delivers the YMCA swim lesson curriculum in group swim lessons and private/semi-private swim lessons and the lifeguard is responsible for the safety and well-being of all aquatic facility patrons. The swim instructor will be responsible for building strong and confident swimmers by creating opportunities that build a sense of achievement and ensure their safety in and around water and ensure the pool deck and all patrons are safe.West Cook YMCA Abuse Policy The West Cook YMCA will not tolerate the mistreatment or abuse of youth or consumers in its programs. A youth is defined as anyone younger than 18 years of age. Any mistreatment or abuse by a staff member or volunteer will result in corrective action, up to and including termination of employment or volunteer service. All reports of suspicious or inappropriate behavior with youth or an allegation of abuse will be taken seriously.The West Cook YMCA will fully cooperate with authorities to investigate all cases of alleged abuse. All West Cook YMCA staff and volunteers shall cooperate to the fullest extent possible in any external investigation by outside authorities or internal investigation conducted by the West Cook YMCA or persons given investigative authority by the West Cook YMCA. Failure to cooperate fully may be grounds for termination. Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly that meet the needs of the participantsCommunicates and builds effective relationships with swimmers and parentsCommunicates information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers swimmers and parents to other programsResponsible for the safety of the participants in their classes. Acts immediately and appropriately in the event of an emergencyResponds immediately to emergency situations accordance with Red Cross and YMCA policies and proceduresPerforms equipment checks and ensures equipment is available, and tests the pool to ensure chemical levels are as they should beEnsures all patrons adhere to all guidelines and rules set in the West Cook YMCA Member Handbook.Maintains records as required (i.e. attendance, progress reports, incident and accident reports, chemical logs, first aid equipment log, etc.)Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduledAdheres to all West Cook YMCA policies, rules, regulations, and procedures, including emergency and safety proceduresEnsures a safe space by making sure to prepare program space and stores all class equipment and notified Associate Director of any damaged equipmentMinimum age of 16Must be able to demonstrate the required skills in accordance with YMCA standardsPerform the Lifeguard certification pre-test and the four core swim strokesMust have current certifications to include but not limited to: YMCA Swim Lesson Certification, YMCA/ American Red Cross Lifeguard certification or equivalent, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid and Emergency Oxygen or ability to obtain prior to startingAbility to work with and relate to people of all ages and abilitiesAbility to communicate with staff and participants in clear, concise mannerAbility to handle questions, complaints and concerns from staff, members, and participants in a friendly, courteous, and professional mannerMust be highly motivated and able to assume a positive and active role in the WCY, even while working under potentially stressful conditions (warm pool facility, upset or injured participants, etc.)Must have the ability to be firm with participants, when necessary, enforce WCY rules, and make sound decisions in order to secure the safety and well-being of all members, guests, facilities, and equipmentWORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:Must be able to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniquesMust be able to remain in the water for an extended period and readiness to frequently enter the water as necessaryMust be able to lift and carry supplies weighing up to 50 poundsExposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluidsExposure to humidity/warm temperatureFree Household MembershipProgram discountsPaid Sick TimeOUR CULTURE: Our mission and core values are brought to life by our culture.
