Summary The LPN must demonstrate an exceptional degree of practical nursing knowledge and skills necessary for concentrated effort and self-direction in carrying out the most complex practical nursing care assignments. Employee exhibits independent technical judgment, critical thinking skills, and the use of independent judgment to carry out complex patient-assigned duties, which include prioritization and coordination of patients seen in the Podiatry Clinic with minimal supervision. Responsibilities The LPN GS-7 is under the supervision of the Chief, Podiatry Section/Surgery Service, yet demonstrates independent technical judgment without the need for readily available supervision. These individuals are technically proficient and self-directed in initiating, performing and completing complex practical nursing care to patients in the Podiatry Clinic. Core Duties: 1. The LPN will: a. Assist in appropriately prioritizing overall podiatry patient care needs and adjust plans/flow of the Podiatry Clinic as needed for optimum patient safety. b. Make astute observations of subtle, less obvious changes, both physical and emotional, in patient's condition and accurately and thoroughly document care delivered and patient's response to care that could require immediate modification of the patient's care plan. c. Appropriately seek assistance and guidance by informing Podiatrist, Primary Care Provider and/or Registered Nurse of changes in patient's condition requiring higher-level Provider and/or Registered Nurse of changes in patient's condition requiring higher-level intervention. d. Observe more subtle physical and emotional changes in patients and demonstrate taking appropriate action based on those observations. e. Promote individual care through thorough observations, monitoring documentation. f. Contribute to Podiatry team initiatives and continuously strives to improve the effectiveness of the team. g. Promptly report any deviations from normal practice patterns to the Podiatry Staff. h. Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to carry out more specialized patient care duties in more complex outpatient care settings. i. Be involved to a greater degree in the development and modification of podiatry treatment plans. j. Work in the Podiatry Clinic under general supervision. k. Exercise independent technical judgments and possess and apply a comprehensive working knowledge of the principles, art and science of practical nursing. 2. The LPN is a technical extender of the podiatrist, thus the work is in support of the podiatrists and their assigned functions that may include, however are not limited to, to the following: a. Daily assignment of a patient panel; b. Preliminary examination and evaluation of patients; c. Coordinating laboratory or other requests; d. Planing down of corns and calluses; e. Nail-trimming; f. Blister care; g. Requesting, obtaining and preparing aerobic cultures and pathology specimens; h. Providing prophylactic instruction on nail and blister care; i. Developing a variety of accommodative devices to correct or alleviate injury or pathologic foot conditions; j. Performing prep for a variety of ankle/foot tapings/casting for the treatment of injury; and, k. Documenting history, findings and treatments in the electronic medical record in the appropriate format. 3. The LPN may assist the podiatrists in a variety of specialized treatments, surgical procedures and tests: 4. Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year) Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior [work experience] or military service experience.
