The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, training, and internal equity.- Pay Range is the entire compensation range for the position.The first review of applications will be on04/24/2026.The Chief Veterinarian serves as the senior clinical leader for acomplex, high-volume animal welfare system spanning Pima Countys 9,200square miles. This role directs the full veterinary operation within anopen-admissions shelter environment, where compassionate, high-qualitycare must be delivered across a wide spectrum of medical and behavioralconditions.Reportingto executive leadership, the Chief Veterinarian providesoversight and mentorship to a team of staff veterinarians, whilepartnering closely with a robust clinic support structure that includesa clinic operations manager, operations coordinator, surgery and triagesupervisors, and veterinary technical staff. Together, this teamsupports an annual intake of approximately 19,000 animals, in additionto managing the medical care of roughly 1,200 animals in foster at anygiven time.The veterinary program operates at significant scale and pace,performing an average of 40 spay/neuter surgeries daily while alsoresponding to emergencyintakes, including those generated by AnimalProtection Services (APS). The Chief Veterinarian ensures clinicalexcellence, operational efficiency, and humane outcomes across allservice areas, balancing population-level medicine with individualizedcare.This position also playsa critical role in advancing animal welfare andpublic accountability, as APS impound cases frequently involve forensicmedical evaluation and require expert veterinary testimony in courtrelated to cruelty and neglect. The Chief Veterinarian must thereforebring not only strong clinical and leadership expertise, but also theability to operate effectively at the intersection of medicine, lawenforcement, and community service.This classification is in the unclassified service and is exempt fromthe Pima County Merit System Rules.Essential Functions:As defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, thisclassification may include any of the following tasks, knowledge,skills, and other characteristics. Work assignments may vary depending on thedepartments need and will be communicated to the applicant or incumbentby the supervisor.Directs all veterinary, pharmaceutical and clinical operations in thePACC facility;Performs daily observations and examinations of impounded animals ordirects other staff veterinarians or veterinary service providers toconduct such observations and examinations of impounded animals,including evaluating the activities of staff veterinarians orveterinarians providing veterinary services to the animal careactivity/facilities;Examines/assesses impounded and found animals that have bitten humansfor symptoms of rabies and directs quarantine and/or euthanasia andpost-mortem analyses to determine presence/absence of rabies;Documents animal welfare medical investigations and the identificationof rabies in impou ded or found animals, and assures proper notificationof local/state health agencies, individuals who have been in contactwith rabies-infected animals and their physicians, health-care andpublic health agencies;Conducts animal alteration surgeries, or oversees those conducted bystaff veterinarians or veterinary service providers;Manages the control, security, record keeping and use of controlleddrugs by staff and veterinary service contractors in the PACC andensures conformance with local, state and federal laws, rules andregulations to maintain the facility and personal Drug EnforcementAgency licenses and permits;Advises PACC, Public Health management and the Board of Health on allveterinary issues or aspects impacting County operations, public healthand welfare;Develops and p
