As the organization continues to grow and evolve following the recent acquisition by Lowe’s, we are investing in strong, forward-thinking talent to support our long-term success.Position OverviewAt Foundation Building Materials (FBM), the Director of Payroll is responsible for the strategic leadership, oversight, and execution of enterprise-wide payroll operations across the United States. This role establishes payroll strategy, ensures regulatory compliance, and drives process standardization, scalability, and continuous improvement.Reporting to senior leadership, the Director of Payroll exercises independent judgment and discretion in developing policies, managing risk, and leading a multi-level payroll organization. This role partners closely with Finance, HR, Legal, and IT to ensure payroll operations align with business objectives, regulatory requirements, and organizational growth.Key ResponsibilitiesStrategic Leadership & GovernanceEstablish and execute the overall payroll strategy, aligning operations with organizational goals and growth initiativesDevelop, implement, and maintain payroll policies, procedures, and internal controls to ensure consistency and complianceProvide leadership and direction to payroll management and staff, including setting objectives, evaluating performance, and driving accountabilityLead organizational design and workforce planning for the payroll function, including resource allocation and succession planningServe as the subject matter expert and primary advisor to executive leadership on payroll-related mattersPayroll Operations & DeliveryOversee end-to-end payroll processing for a multi-state workforce, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and data integrityDirect the administration of complex payroll elements, including multi-state taxation, garnishments, benefits deductions, and incentive compensationEnsure payroll systems (e.g., Dayforce) are optimized, maintained, and aligned with operational and reporting needsEvaluate and implement process improvements, automation, and system enhancements to increase efficiency and scalabilityCompliance, Risk Management & ReportingEnsure compliance with all federal, state, and local wage and hour laws, tax regulations, and reporting requirementsOversee payroll audits (internal and external), ensuring accurate documentation and timely resolution of findingsIdentify and mitigate payroll-related risks through strong internal controls and governance practicesProvide executive-level reporting, analytics, and insights related to payroll costs, trends, and workforce dataCross-Functional PartnershipCollaborate with HR, Finance, Legal, and IT to support organizational initiatives, including acquisitions, system implementations, and policy changesPartner with Finance on payroll accounting, reconciliations, and financial reporting requirementsSupport integration activities related to mergers, acquisitions, and organizational restructuringAct as a key stakeholder in enterprise system upgrades and transformations impacting payrollAdditional Responsibilities & MiscellaneousPerform other duties as assigned to support Payroll and corporate objectivesQualificationsExtensive experience in payroll leadership, including oversight of multi-state, high-volume payroll operationsDeep knowledge of payroll regulations, tax laws, wage and hour compliance, and internal controlsDemonstrated ability to lead and develop high-performing teams, including managers and supervisorsStrong strategic thinking, decision-making, and problem-solving capabilitiesExperience with enterprise payroll systems, preferably DayforceAdvanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly ExcelProven ability to manage complex projects, drive process improvements, and influence cross-functional stakeholdersReports ToVP of PayrollCompensationThe listed pay range reflects the expected base rate for this position. Within the range, individual pay may vary based on experience, qualifications, and work location within state. This is a full-time position with competitive pay and benefits.Base: $160,000 - $185,000 per yearBonus: 30% Target BonusTotal Compensation (Base + Bonus): The successful candidate could reasonably expect a Total Compensation Package in the range of $208,000 - $240,500Equity: This role is not eligible for equity opportunities, awards or grantsBenefitsAt FBM, we’re committed to supporting our employees both personally and professionally.
