Posting Summary Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking an Associate Director for the Eagleton Institute of Politics. Reporting to the director of the Eagleton Institute of Politics, the Associate Director provides leadership, direction, strategic vision, operational oversight, and program development, through the stewardship of institutional resources, to effectively meet the mission and core values of the Eagleton Institute of Politics. As such, the Associate Director works with the Director to construct, support, and implement the strategic plans and operations for the Institute as a whole, solve complex organizational problems as well as recommend relevant policies, procedures, and metrics of impact. This position also oversees the Institute public programs and events and supervise event staff responsible for implementation. Among the key duties of this position are the following: Provides senior administrative, operational and confidential advice to leadership. Manages confidential projects and communications on behalf of the Director and the Institute, involving both internal and external audiences. Ensures alignment with institutional goals and facilitates cross-functional collaboration internally and across university departments and units. Supervises Institute building and technology infrastructure, systems communications, events and plays a key role in fundraising, including grant writing. The Eagleton Institute is a collaborative team. On occasion, all members are asked to participate in Institute-wide and/or cross-team projects. Certifications/Licenses Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong communication skills and the capacity to communicate to various constituencies and levels both within and outside the Institute and the University. Experience in a leadership role in non-profit organizations. Experience supervising multiple employees and must have meticulous project management skills. Outstanding human relations skills, and the ability to function in and facilitate a team environment. Strong interpersonal skills and comfort with meeting and working with a broad range of people - from high-level public officials to media representatives to vendor staff to students - in highly visible settings. Ability to independently manage multiple tasks, short deadlines, often within stressful situations. Ability to be well-organized, efficient, responsive, and detail oriented. Strategic focus and operational efficiency with innate good judgement. The Eagleton Institute of Politics examines, analyzes and promotes discussion of the practice of American politics, and a thorough knowledge of that field is essential to carrying out the work of this position, both internally and externally. Because the Institute’s public programming and research focus on American politics, the Associate Director must understand the relevant positions, processes and relationships, media environment, and be aware of sensitive political issues. Thorough grounding in U.S. and New Jersey politics and government is essential, whether through academic experience, personal involvement, or both. Comfortable working in a bipartisan environment. Extensive knowledge of the substance of American politics. Preferred Qualifications Familiarity with Rutgers’ administrative structure. Experience with database management. Equipment Utilized Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher), social media, web design and desktop publishing, learning management systems, and Zoom (or equivalent) platforms. Physical Demands and Work Environment Eagleton offices are located within a historic building with no elevator. The duties of this position regularly involve navigating stairs numerous times a day. Special Conditions This position requires availability to work evenings occasionally during the academic year and some weekends.
