Job#: 3031297Job Description:Sr. Field Operations EngineerAssociate Principal Engineer & Energy Manager -- Utility & Telecommunications PartnershipsRemote u2022 Travel: ~25%Position SummaryThe Sr. Field Operations Engineer provides technical leadership and quality assurance for telecom utility power systems supporting fiber huts, edge data centers, and remote network facilities. This role establishes and enforces engineering standards, reviews and approves designs and Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) studies, and ensures compliance with applicable telecom codes, internal standards, and program requirements.Beyond engineering oversight, the role leads energy partnership and leasing efforts in coordination with utilities, independent power providers, data center developers, and internal Legal, Finance, and Engineering teams. The engineer is also responsible for monitoring, reporting, and driving improvements in PUE performance through defined targets, benchmarking, and corrective action plans.Key ResponsibilitiesUtility Engineeringu2022 Lead technical standards and best practices for telecom utility power systems and telecom site integration.u2022 Oversee QA/QC processes for deliverables impacting network power, capacity, reliability, and uptime.u2022 Mentor engineering staff and serve as the primary technical point of contact for program and project stakeholders.u2022 Ensure compliance with telecom codes, industry best practices, and program-specific technical standards.u2022 Design and review utility substation and electrical power systems supporting telecom sites, including fiber huts, edge data centers, and remote shelters.u2022 Prepare and review power usage studies covering power density, material albedo, battery technologies, PUE calculations, and applicable building codes.u2022 Support business development activities and provide field troubleshooting guidance across departments.Energy Partnerships & Leasingu2022 Build and strengthen relationships with independent power providers, edge data center developers and lease providers, utilities, and other key stakeholders.u2022 Partner with Legal to structure commercial agreements for strategic partnerships, and support energy diligence and contracting for Power Purchase Arrangements (PPAs).u2022 Collaborate with site selection teams to evaluate powered-land opportunities and identify new U.S. locations for near-term energy capacity and long-term utility growth.u2022 Coordinate across engineering and design, site development, sustainability, network, policy, communications, construction, legal, and finance teams.u2022 Support development and execution of the data center energy supply strategy, and lead or contribute to energy projects as business needs evolve.Efficiency, Reporting & PUE Targetsu2022 Monitor and report PUE for telecom sites; establish baselines, set annual targets, and drive continuous improvement in energy efficiency and cost performance.u2022 Publish monthly PUE reports with variance analysis and corrective actions for variances of 5% or more against target.u2022 Benchmark performance against industry standards, where modern facilities typically range from 1.2 to 1.5 PUE.PUE Performance Targets:u2022 Modern telecom / edge data center builds: operational PUE = 1.35, with a stretch goal of = 1.25.u2022 Legacy or temporary shelters: operational PUE = 2.0.Key Deliverablesu2022 Engineering standards, design reviews, and QA/QC documentation for telecom utility power systems.u2022 Power usage and efficiency study reports, including PUE calculations and supporting analyses.u2022 Technical support and due diligence materials for energy partnerships, leasing arrangements, and powered-land evaluations.u2022 Monthly PUE performance reports, including variance analysis and corrective action recommendations.QualificationsRequiredu2022 Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Business, Environmental Science, Energy, or a related field.u2022 7+ years of relevant engineering or field experience in telecom or utility environments.u2022 10+ years of experience addressing commercial energy challenges and forging long-term partnerships for large customer loads.u2022 Demonstrated experience conducting due diligence and managing multiple large-scale projects.u2022 Working knowledge of transmission, distribution, utility peak-shaving strategies, and prime generation.u2022 Proven technical leadership, quality delivery, and mentoring experience, with strong communication and relationship-building skills.u2022 Demonstrated expertise in both regulated and deregulated electrical energy markets.u2022 Proficiency with standard productivity and analytics tools (Excel, PowerPoint, Google Docs, etc.).Preferredu2022 Professional Engineer (PE) licensure.u2022 Experience with Energy-as-a-Service (EaaS) business models.u2022 International experience supporting large customer energy loads.TravelApproximately 25% travel expected.?EEO Employer:Apex Systems is an equal opportunity employer.
