Job Title: Lab Technician Job Description The Lab Technician performs quality control testing on production batches using established written methods, interprets test results and historical data to ensure products meet or exceed customer quality requirements, and provides clear instructions to production personnel on any necessary batch adjustments. This role supports the efficient operation of the laboratory through accurate documentation, effective use of lab equipment and computer systems, and strong collaboration with production and quality teams while maintaining a safe, clean, and well-organized work area. Responsibilities + Test production batches according to specific written testing methods and document all results accurately. + Interpret test results and historical data to verify that products meet all quality specifications and customer requirements. + Approve batches only after confirming that all required tests are complete and results meet specifications before moving to the next production process. + Enter all batch data into the electronic batch records system in a timely and accurate manner. + Generate required paperwork and documentation in accordance with customer specifications and internal procedures. + Gather and prepare customer samples, ensuring they are packaged, labeled, and sent according to requirements. + Follow all standard technical procedures while exercising sound judgment and initiative to accomplish assigned work with minimal supervision. + Perform raw material testing when needed, following appropriate test methods and filing related paperwork. + Gather, stock, and manage the product retain area to ensure proper storage and traceability of retained samples. + Use appropriate computer systems and software to support effective testing, data entry, and reporting. + Determine the disposition of non-compliant finished goods, including first-case and last-case evaluations. + Place non-conforming materials on hold as needed and communicate their status clearly to relevant departments. + Support quality management systems and safety systems by following established policies, procedures, and documentation requirements. + Maintain inventory of laboratory supplies, restock items upon receipt, and request additional supplies when levels are low. + Maintain laboratory housekeeping standards by keeping work areas clean and organized and by cleaning all test equipment regularly. + Adhere to all safety requirements, including proper handling of materials and use of personal protective equipment as required. + Identify and communicate product issues or trends to production and other departments as appropriate. + Review batch slips for completeness and accuracy, ensuring all required information is present and correct. + Create, maintain, and update standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the Quality Department to meet internal and external requirements. + Assist in training other lab technicians by sharing knowledge of procedures, equipment, and quality standards. + Perform wet chemistry techniques such as titrations, pH measurements, and other routine laboratory analyses as needed. + Operate and maintain laboratory instruments such as viscometers, spectrometers, and gas chromatography (GC) equipment according to established procedures. + Conduct inspections of materials and products to verify conformance to quality standards and specifications. + Contribute to a collaborative, team-oriented lab environment by supporting colleagues and being willing to take on multiple tasks as needed. Essential Skills + At least 1 year of laboratory-based experience performing material testing. + High school diploma or GED. + Ability to see and distinguish color, with or without reasonable accommodation, to support accurate testing and evaluation. + Willingness and ability to work overtime, with or without reasonable accommodation, based on production and testing needs. + Hands-on experience in a quality control or laboratory environment, including routine testing and documentation. + Ability to follow detailed written testing methods and standard operating procedures consistently. + Ability to work with minimal supervision while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail. + Proficiency in basic laboratory techniques, including wet chemistry and titrations. + Comfort using laboratory instruments such as viscometers and spectrometers. + Basic computer skills and ability to use electronic batch record systems or similar data entry tools. + Strong organizational skills for managing samples, retains, and lab inventory. + Effective communication skills to relay product issues and batch status to production and other departments. Additional Skills & Qualifications + Experience in a quality control (QC) environment within manufacturing or a similar setting. + Experience or coursework in chemistry or a related scientific discipline. + Familiarity with wet chemistry techniques, including titration, pH measurement, and general laboratory analysis. + Experience operating laboratory equipment such as viscometers, spectrometers, and gas chromatography (GC) instruments. + Knowledge of good manufacturing practices (GMP) or other quality management systems. + Experience creating, maintaining, or updating standard operating procedures (SOPs) for quality or laboratory operations. + Experience supporting or working within formal quality management systems and safety systems. + Previous involvement in training or mentoring other laboratory staff. + Strong inspection skills and attention to detail when reviewing documentation and batch slips for completeness and accuracy. Work Environment This role is based in a laboratory located within a paint manufacturing facility. The environment can be dusty and dirty at times, and the Lab Technician should be comfortable working around paint and related materials and not be concerned about occasionally getting paint on clothing or personal protective equipment. The position involves regular use of laboratory instruments such as viscometers, spectrometers, gas chromatography (GC) equipment, and standard wet chemistry tools for titration, pH measurement, and other testing. The Lab Technician works closely with one other technician on the shift and maintains constant communication with the production team to coordinate testing, approvals, and issue resolution. The lab culture is laid-back yet highly collaborative, with a strong team mentality where individuals wear multiple hats and support each other to meet production and quality goals. Overtime may be required based on production demands. The facility provides a structured quality and safety framework, and the role involves following established safety procedures and using appropriate protective equipment as needed. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Baltimore, MD. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $26.00 - $26.00/hr.
