Job Title: Phlebotomist Job Description The Phlebotomist plays a key role in providing high-quality patient care by performing blood draws and other specimen collections, processing and managing specimens, and supporting the overall workflow of the laboratory site. This role independently handles the full patient process from check-in through specimen collection, processing, and data entry, while delivering excellent customer service in a fast-paced clinical environment. Responsibilities + Perform venipuncture and other blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles on a variety of patient populations, including pediatric patients. + Collect, label, and store blood and other specimens (such as urine and fecal samples) according to established procedures and test requirements. + Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and specimen collection procedures to patients to ensure understanding and comfort. + Match laboratory requisition forms or computer-generated labels to specimen tubes to ensure accurate identification. + Label, centrifuge, split, freeze, and otherwise process specimens as required by the specific test orders. + Check all test requisitions or computer labels against orders or scripts to ensure 100% accuracy before processing. + Package specimens for transport and follow specific protocols to maintain specimen integrity, including correct temperature control and appropriate collection containers or tubes. + Record maintenance data, perform decontamination tasks, and support general laboratory upkeep as required. + Update and maintain accurate patient information and perform data entry related to orders, specimens, and results. + Answer telephone calls and communicate laboratory results or information to satisfy inquiries in a professional manner. + Understand and fully interpret physiciansu2019 orders related to laboratory testing and specimen requirements. + Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and follow all safety and infection control procedures. + Attend annual departmental trainings and maintain current knowledge of procedures and protocols. + Assist with troubleshooting, training, and workflow improvement recommendations within the site as needed. + Independently manage the siteu2019s phlebotomy and specimen processing operations after training, handling patients from start to finish, including drawing blood, processing, and order entry. Essential Skills + At least 6 months of experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced environment, with the ability to draw and process specimens independently. + Demonstrated proficiency in performing blood draws on pediatric patients. + High school diploma or GED completion. + Ability to perform venipuncture and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles. + Experience with specimen handling, specimen management, and specimen storage procedures. + Ability to properly label, centrifuge, and prepare samples for testing and transport. + Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite. + Strong data entry skills and accuracy in matching requisitions, labels, and specimens. + Knowledge of and adherence to OSHA and DEP regulations and laboratory safety procedures. + Excellent customer service skills and the ability to interact professionally and courteously with patients and clinical staff. + Ability to work independently as the sole phlebotomy and laboratory representative at the site after training. Additional Skills & Qualifications + Experience working in a laboratory, blood bank, biobank, or similar biological sample environment. + Experience in medical assisting or related clinical support roles. + Experience handling a variety of patient specimens, including blood, urine, and fecal samples. + Familiarity with centrifuges and other standard laboratory equipment. + Experience working with pediatric and geriatric patient populations. + Experience with Cerner or similar electronic medical record or laboratory information systems. + Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in a fast-paced clinical setting. + Ability to manage the full patient workflow from check-in through specimen collection, processing, and order entry. + Potential for transition from temporary to permanent employment, depending on performance and business needs. Work Environment This is a full-time, day-shift role, typically scheduled Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with slight variations possible depending on clinic needs. The primary work location is a clinical facility in Fort Wayne, where the phlebotomist operates as the primary on-site laboratory representative after training. The environment is fast-paced and patient-focused, with frequent interaction with individuals of varying ages, including pediatric patients. The role involves regular use of laboratory equipment such as centrifuges and specimen storage units, as well as computers and software including Microsoft Office Suite and clinical or laboratory information systems. Work includes standing for extended periods, handling biological specimens, and following strict safety and infection control protocols. Mileage and drive time may be compensated when travel between locations is required, in accordance with applicable policies. Professional clinical attire suitable for a healthcare and laboratory setting is expected. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Fort Wayne, IN.
