Network Security Engineer / Fortinet Firewall Engineer (FortiManager) Location: Mostly Remote (Approximately 20% Onsite u2013 New Jersey) Experience Level: Expert Employment Type: W2 Contract Role Overview We are seeking an Expert-Level Network Security Engineer with deep, hands-on Fortinet firewall experience, including FortiManager, to serve as a senior technical authority for enterprise network security operations. This role requires strong, real-world production experience designing, deploying, and securing large-scale enterprise and data center networks, with FortiGate firewalls as a core security platform. The ideal candidate brings an exceptionally strong networking background, advanced troubleshooting skills, and the ability to fully own complex security and network initiatives. The position is primarily remote, with limited onsite presence (up to 20%) in New Jersey. Key Responsibilities + Act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Fortinet network security technologies, including FortiGate firewalls and FortiManager + Design, deploy, configure, and optimize enterprise and data center firewall architectures + Build, manage, and enforce FortiGate security policies (Security, NAT, VPN, IPS, Application Control, Web Filtering) + Administer FortiManager for centralized firewall management, policy packages, device groups, and configuration templates + Partner with IT Cyber Security teams to implement approved security standards and best practices + Own network and security incidents end-to-end, providing advanced troubleshooting and escalation to Fortinet TAC when required + Perform firewall firmware upgrades, patching, and maintenance activities + Deliver Root Cause Analysis (RCA) documentation for outages and security events + Develop and maintain detailed network and security documentation, including diagrams and SOPs + Communicate effectively with engineering, security, infrastructure, and leadership teams Required Technical Skills Fortinet Security (Expert-Level) + FortiGate firewall deployment, configuration, and production support + FortiManager administration (policy packages, centralized management, templates) + Firewall policy lifecycle management and rule optimization + Site-to-site and remote-access VPNs + IPS, Application Control, and security inspection policies Networking Fundamentals (Advanced) + TCP/IP, routing, and switching deep knowledge + Enterprise WAN technologies + BGP, OSPF, EIGRP, DMVPN + VLANs, subnetting, and Layer 2/3 design + Cisco routers and switches + Enterprise and data center routing environments Must-Have Skills + Fortinet Firewall Engineering (hands-on production experience) + FortiManager (required) + Network Security Engineering + Advanced Routing & WAN + Cisco Routing & Switching + BGP + Enterprise Networking Additional Qualifications (Preferred) + Expert-level Network Engineer + Hands-on experience with Cisco Nexus 9000 (Nexus 9K) + Experience with VXLAN in enterprise or data center environments + Proven ability to work independently and own complex firewall and network initiatives + Strong documentation and communication skills What Success Looks Like + You have real-world FortiGate and FortiManager experience, not just exposure + You understand networking deeply enough to troubleshoot issues beyond the firewall layer + You can design and support Fortinet security solutions at enterprise scale + You operate autonomously and are trusted to lead complex network security efforts Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Edison, NJ.
