Medical Instrument Technician (Gastroenterology) (GI)

Summary This position perform diagnostic examinations or medical treatment procedures as part of diagnosis and treatment of patients. It involves operating or monitoring diagnostic and therapeutic medical instruments associated with cardiac catheterization, pulmonary examinations and evaluations, heart bypass surgery/heart-lung transplant surgery (perfusion), electrocardiography, electroencephalography, polysomnography, hemodialysis, ultrasonography, vascular sonography, and gastroenterology. Responsibilities Major duties include, but are not limited to the following: Provides direct assistance with diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as anoscopy, argon plasma cautery, colonoscopy, cytology, digestive tract biopsies, enteroscopy, esophageal biopsy, esophageal dilation, polypectomies, sigmoidoscopy, endoscopic ultrasound (EUS),esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG), esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), and pH Manometry studies. Assures sterility of procedural fields, therapeutic instruments, medical devices, and related reusable medical equipment (RME). Collaborates, communicate, and demonstrate customer service skills and interpersonal skills with all healthcare professionals to ensure quality and continuity of care. Assists interdisciplinary procedural team members in protecting patients from injury caused by therapeutic instruments, medical devices, related equipment, and extraneous objects. Provides direct patient care, obtains vital sign measurements, performs specimen management and processing, and assists with medication administration. Assists with nursing care interventions to protect patients from hospital acquired infections, participates in the Time Out process, adheres to implant, and specimen handling and management policies and procedures, recognizes changes in patient care situations, and assists with initiation of appropriate interventions and/or emergency responses for patient safety. Maintains competency and proficiency on maintenance, cleaning, and preparation of procedural-specific reusable medical equipment (RME) per manufacturer's instructions for use (IFU). Collects, process, and label all specimens; train other technicians in basic endoscopic procedures; work in and outside the GI unit, offering technician support during emergent and on-call endoscopic cases; and assists RN in patient care duties such as obtaining vital signs, dressing, and documenting all pertinent information in the patient's records. Performs other related duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Monday through Saturday from 7:00am to 5:30pm; Rotating on-call hours. Recruitment Incentive (Sign-on Bonus): Not Authorized.
