Job Title: Construction Materials TechnicianJob Description The Construction Materials Technician plays a key role in protecting major construction investments by performing critical field and laboratory testing, observation, and inspection of construction materials. This position supports a wide range of projects, including transportation infrastructure, commercial developments, power generation and transmission facilities, and educational and healthcare buildings. Using innovative technology, the technician documents findings quickly and accurately to help project teams identify and address issues early, improving durability, safety, and compliance with project plans and specifications. Responsibilities + Perform field and laboratory testing, observation, and inspection of construction materials such as soils, aggregates, concrete, asphalt, masonry, reinforcing steel, and structural steel. + Conduct field or laboratory testing of soils, concrete, and asphalt to verify quality, durability, and compliance with project specifications. + Perform field observations and inspections of foundations, reinforcing steel, masonry, and structural steel to support safe and durable construction practices. + Communicate effectively with project managers, engineering technicians, client representatives, and contractor representatives regarding construction site conditions, project requirements, and testing, observation, and inspection needs. + Transport material samples with proper labeling and documentation to the laboratory for further testing and analysis. + Collect, prepare, and submit accurate data and observations in both written and digital formats for daily transmittal to the project manager. + Provide clear documentation of findings and results, ensuring information is complete, accurate, and ready for client review. + Discuss data accuracy and observations with the project manager prior to report submittal. + Submit documentation and communicate test and inspection results as directed by the project manager. + Learn and assist with tasks under close supervision of higher-level technicians or staff professionals, progressively taking on more responsibility. + Maintain and clean assigned equipment, vehicles, tools, and work areas to ensure reliability and safety. + Assist with scheduling and dispatching technicians to project sites as needed. + Follow strict safety rules, standards, and practices on all projects, including performing pre-task planning before work begins. + Report any safety issues, incidents, or concerns promptly to management. + Maintain high quality standards on all projects by following established procedures and project specifications. + Drive a company vehicle, such as a Ford F-150 or equivalent, to and from job sites and the laboratory. + Participate in internal safety training and certification programs as required. + Progress into increased levels of responsibility and independence as skills, certifications, and experience grow. Essential Skills + At least 6 months of experience in construction materials testing, inspection, or a closely related field. + Experience performing or assisting with soil testing and soil sampling in field or laboratory settings. + Experience with concrete testing and concrete inspection, including basic field test methods. + Ability to perform field testing, observation, and inspection of construction materials such as soils, aggregates, concrete, asphalt, and steel. + Strong written and digital reporting skills to document test results, observations, and inspections clearly and accurately. + Ability to communicate effectively with project managers, technicians, client representatives, and contractor representatives. + Capability to transport material samples safely with proper identifying documentation for laboratory analysis. + Skill in maintaining and cleaning equipment, vehicles, and work areas to ensure proper operation and safety. + Ability to follow detailed safety rules and practices and to perform pre-task planning before executing work. + Commitment to maintaining quality standards on all assigned projects. + Valid driveru2019s license with an acceptable driving record. + High school diploma or equivalent education. + Ability to drive and operate a pickup truck, such as a Ford F-150 or equivalent, to reach various project sites. + Willingness and physical ability to work primarily outdoors in varying weather conditions. + Capacity to learn under close supervision and progressively take on more complex testing and inspection duties. Additional Skills & Qualifications + Willingness to obtain ACI (American Concrete Institute) certification within 90 days of hire, as required for the role. + Willingness to obtain Nuclear Density Gauge certification within 6 months of hire, as a preferred qualification. + Interest in obtaining additional certifications such as NICET, ICC, or related construction inspection and materials testing credentials. + Successful completion of related internal safety certifications as part of onboarding and ongoing development. + Background or interest in construction, construction inspection, or construction materials testing. + Familiarity with nuclear density gauge equipment for soil and asphalt compaction testing, or willingness to learn. + Motivation to pursue ongoing training, education, and certifications supported by the employer. + Desire to grow into leadership or management roles over time through demonstrated performance and professional development. + Ability to work some weekends and travel overnight when project needs require. + Comfort using technology and digital tools for data collection, reporting, and communication. Work Environment This role is predominantly field-based, with more than 90% of the work performed outdoors in a variety of weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and sun. Technicians regularly travel to active construction sites such as roadways, bridges, airports, wind farms, solar farms, commercial developments, schools, and healthcare facilities. The position involves driving a pickup truck, such as a Ford F-150 or equivalent, to transport equipment and samples between project sites and the laboratory. Work may include some weekend assignments and occasional overnight travel depending on project schedules and locations. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Charlotte, NC. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $25.00/hr.
