Summary The District of Columbia Courts, offers internships for students and recent graduates interested in seeking valuable experience in courts administration. Interns have the opportunity to make meaningful contributions to the Courts' mission to protect rights and liberties, uphold and interpret the law, and resolve disputes fairly and effectively in the District of Columbia. This internship is for Summer 2026. Responsibilities This position is an unpaid internship working with the Family Court Operations Division. The intern's major duties are below: Gain insight to day-to-day operations of the Family Court. Observe the role and functions of the Family Court by attending training, assisting court staff, reviewing court pleadings and participating in meetings. Learn how data is used to improve court functions to achieve increased access to justice. Learn how to provide legal information to unrepresented litigants as they navigate the court system. Learn the process to create and update template court pleadings. Gain experience conducting legal research into family law matters and develop professional and personal skills. Support other Family Court Branches with special projects. Requirements Conditions of Employment Background and security investigation are required. Must be at least 18 years old. Must commit to a minimum of 10 hours per week. To qualify for this position, you must submit the following: 1. Resume 2. Completed Vacancy Questionnaire 3. Qualifications Applicant must be a U.S. Citizen or authorized by United States Citizenship and Immigration Service to intern in the U.S and at least 18 years old. THIS INTERNSHIP IS FOR UNDERGRADUATE, GRADUATE AND LAW STUDENTS AND/ OR SPRING 2026 LAW SCHOOL GRADUATES. Preference will be given to students with majors in Political Science, Social Work, Sociology, Family Law, Communication Studies, Public Administration, Psychology, Liberal Arts Law students must be enrolled in an accredited law school program. The student must be able to commit a minimum of 10 hours per week to track ABA credit hour requirements. Please note that authorization for the release of your adult criminal record revealing any convictions and forfeitures, and any criminal cases currently pending before the courts is required. If you are selected for the position, a criminal history records check will be conducted. The incumbent should be an enthusiastic and engaged professional who enjoys working with a diverse group of Court personnel and customers and lives the DC Courts' values of Accountability, Excellence, Fairness, Integrity, Respect, and Transparency. Education To qualify based on education, upload a copy of your law school transcript or degree. The transcript must show the name of the college or university, your name, list of courses with credit hours, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Only education or degrees recognized by the U.S. Department of Education from accredited colleges, universities, schools, or institutions may be used to qualify for District of Columbia Courts employment.
