Medical Instrument Technician (Echocardiography)

Summary The incumbent works in the Medicine Specialty Service, Cardiology Section, of the Veteran Affairs Medical Center (VAMC). The sonographer has intimate knowledge of thoracic anatomy and physiology related to cardiovascular function. Echocardiography technicians at this level identify and record anomalies indicative of disease, injury, or other medically significant conditions from ultrasound imaging and simultaneous recordings of the Doppler. Responsibilities Echocardiography technicians incorporate the causes and results of various symptoms and conditions into a plan of ultrasonic diagnostic examination. They change and develop sounding techniques to accommodate such variables as limited patient mobility, variation in physical condition or dimension of the patient, presence of prosthesis or foreign objects, and ultrasonic response of different body parts. They produce diagnostic quality images and Doppler frequency recordings using M-mode, two-dimensional, and Doppler ultrasound. They work with the physician to complete transesophageal echocardiograms and stress echocardiology procedures. They are responsible for adhering to all departmental, service, hospital, agency, and national regulations and policies. The supervisory medical instrument technician for echocardiography will maintain competencies for fellow medical instrument technicians (Echocardiography) and will serve as the technical director for the echocardiology department.
