Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP). You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply. Responsibilities GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF ASSIGNED DUTIES: The Lead Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) II/III Certified Nurse Practitioner (NP) practices in Anesthesia and Pain Management Service - Intensive Care Unit (ICU) to provide a full range of services emphasizing quality, timeliness, and the advancement of the Veterans Affairs (VA) mission. The NP provides advanced clinical practice, consultation, and management. The NP practices to the full extent of their education, training, and certification. Core functions are outlined in the clinical privileges that correspond with this position. The NP has prescriptive authority for a panel of patients or program as indicated by their position. As the clinical lead for the APP team, the Lead ICU NP in addition to providing direct patient care, serves as a mentor and resource, and works collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team to ensure optimal outcomes for critically ill patients. The Lead ICU NP participates in quality improvement, policy development, and staff education activities, and may have administrative responsibilities as delegated by critical care leadership FUNCTIONS OF ASSIGNED DUTIES: The NP is a licensed independent practitioner with advanced education and national certification who provides evidence-based care for a population of patients. Major duties and responsibilities of the position: - Independently manages a panel of patients with acute and chronic health conditions with an emphasis on health promotion and disease prevention using evidence-based practice. - Develops and implements an individualized plan to achieve optimal population health and disease management. - Demonstrates leadership and works collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team. - Orders and interprets labs, tests, and diagnostic studies. - Prescribes pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions. - Initiates referrals and consults to specialty services. - Provides education to patients and their families. - Assesses and adjusts the plan of care as needed to achieve optimal patient outcomes. - Exemplifies the ICARE core values of-Integrity, Commitment, Advocacy, Respect, and Excellence. - Act as clinical lead for ICU's advanced practice provider (APP) team mentoring other NPs and physician assistants - Assist in administrative duties as assigned by ICU leadership, and delegate tasks appropriately and ensure adherence to ICU protocols and best practices. - Serve as a resource for ICU nursing and APP staff, providing education, support and training. - Assist in recruiting, orientating and onboarding of new ICU APPs. - Help develop, review, and update ICU policies, protocols, and clinical guidelines in collaboration with leadership. - Participate in and lead quality improvement initiatives and clinical audits to improve care delivery and patient outcomes. - Assist in scheduling and staffing of ICU and coverage planning. - Represent the APPs at meetings or on committees. - Help ensure compliance with hospital, state, and federal regulations. Physical Requirements: Incumbent must possess the mental and physical ability to satisfactorily perform the duties of the proposed assignment. Physical requirements include visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. May involve potentially long periods of lifting, carrying, pulling, pushing, reaching above shoulder, walking, standing, sitting, kneeling, and repeated bending. Transferring patients and objects may be required. Safe patient handling equipment is provided. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations, operative/invasive procedures, or home settings. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs.
