Description: BID/JOB ANNOUNCEMENT ELEVATOR INSPECTOR Department of Buildings Elevator Bureau Number of Positions: 2 (Additional vacancies possible pending budget approval) Starting Salary: $13,783.47/monthly This position is open to the public and all current City employees covered under the Cityu2019s collective bargaining agreement with INTERNATIONAL UNION OF ELEVATOR CONSTRUCTORS, LOCAL 2 (BARGAINING UNIT #43). Under general supervision, reviews building plans and elevator specifications, and inspects elevators, escalators, and other moving conveyance systems to ensure installations, alterations, and repairs comply with applicable provisions of the municipal building code and established safety standards. Performs related duties as required. ESSENTIAL DUTIES u00b7 Reviews plans and construction specifications for elevators, escalators, and other moving conveyance systems submitted with building permit applications for compliance with the municipal building code u00b7 Identifies materials and installation methods that are not in compliance with the municipal building code, explains code requirements, and recommends changes to bring plans into compliance u00b7 Conducts field inspections to ensure that the installation and repair of elevators adhere to approved permit plans and construction specifications u00b7 Ensures that proper materials and equipment are being used for elevator installation and that the elevator unit is connected and operating properly u00b7 Conducts semi-annual elevator inspections and observes the conduct of safety checks prior to the issuance of a certificate of inspection u00b7 Inspects mechanical devices (e.g., amusement rides, lifts) to ensure proper operation and safety u00b7 Prepare reports documenting inspection findings u00b7 Interprets and explains elevator provisions of the building code and code violations to engineers, architects, and contractors u00b7 Issues citations for elevator code violations found during inspections u00b7 Conduct follow-up inspections to ensure that repairs have been made and that code violations have been corrected u00b7 Testifies at the circuit court regarding elevator violations identified during inspections and corresponding citations issued u00b7 Prepares work reports on inspection activities u00b7 Inspects job sites for proper building permits and certificates of inspection _Additional duties may be required for this position_ Location: 2045 W. Washington, Chicago, IL 60612 Days: Monday-Friday Hours: 7:00am-3:30pm THIS POSITION IS IN THE CAREER SERVICE Qualifications: u00b7 Successful completion of a US Department of Labor registered elevator construction mechanic apprenticeship training program and journeyman status OR Should the above criteria not be fulfilled, the following options are available: u00b7 Successful completion of an industry or company sponsored apprenticeship training program in the elevator construction mechanic trade, PLUS two (2) years of journey level work experience in the elevator construction mechanic trade u00b7 Six (6) years of journey level experience in the elevator construction mechanic trade Licensure, Certification, or Other Qualifications u00b7 A valid State of Illinois Driveru2019s license is required u00b7 Must have the permanent use of an automobile that is properly insured, including a clause specifically insuring the City of Chicago from accident liability Working Conditions + General field environment + Exposure to outdoor weather conditions + Work performed in cramped or confined locations + Work performed above or below ground level + Exposure to hazardous conditions (e.g., construction sites) SELECTION REQUIREMENTS This position requires applicants to complete an interview.
