CIRES/ NOAA Global Monitoring Lab Temporary Researcher Requisition Number: 71864 Location: Boulder Colorado Employment Type: Research Faculty Schedule: Part Time Posting Close Date: 14-May-2026 Date Posted: Job Summary The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) is seeking a temporary (3-9 months) Trace Gas Engineer or Scientist to support the NOAA Global Monitoring Laboratory's (GML) Technology Transitions, Engineering, and Applications (TTEA) division. This temporary, bridge position is responsible for maintaining project continuity and facilitating the transfer of technical knowledge from a departing engineer to a permanent successor. Within the broader GML mission of conducting research that addresses three major challenges: greenhouse gas and carbon cycle feedbacks, changes in clouds, aerosols and surface radiation, and stratospheric ozone recovery, the TTEA division aims to advance observing capabilities for direct measurements of atmospheric trace gases to enhance a) global and regional scale carbon emissions and/or uptake detection, b) model and satellite evaluation used to understand trends and variability of greenhouse gases and ozone-depleting substances and c) the understanding of tropospheric and stratospheric composition feedbacks on earth's radiation budget in a changing climate. Who We Are At CIRES (, more than 900 people work to understand the dynamic Earth system, including people's relationship with the planet. An institute at the University of Colorado Boulder, we have partnered with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) since 1967. Our areas of expertise include weather and climate, wildfire and water, changes at Earth's poles, air quality and atmospheric chemistry, water resources, solid Earth sciences, and more. Our researchers work in 10 CU Boulder departments and eight NOAA laboratories and centers. The NOAA GML TTEA division develops, implements and/or transitions to operations innovative atmospheric observing platforms, instruments and sampling techniques to fulfill this mission. We collaborate across GML to provide new technologies and measurement capabilities for field campaigns. This temporary position is a part-time role focused on documenting computer code used by the TTEA divisions to support the High-altitude Operational Returning Unmanned System (HORUS) and GML's instrumentation for commercial and light research aircraft. What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be + Acquire operational knowledge of existing Python and C codebases and atmospheric sensor platforms directly from the outgoing engineer + Document current hardware systems, software functionality, and standard operating procedures + Maintain, test, and troubleshoot existing measurement equipment for ground, aircraft, balloon, and unmanned systems + Provide technical support to collaborating scientists and partner organizations for active field projects + Prepare structured transition materials, including organized codebases, hardware specifications, and project documentation + Train the incoming permanent engineer and execute the transfer of technical responsibilities for all lab projects What You Should Know + The hours for this position may vary and are not guaranteed + Anticipate 40-hour work weeks, Monday-Friday, though this may vary depending on workload. Position may include infrequent, short-duration field work + Work will be conducted at the NOAA Global Monitoring Laboratory in Boulder CO + Based on current funding, this position will last approximately 3 months and may be extended if additional funding is identified + This appointment is not eligible for vacation leave, holidays, annual merit pay increases, nor employee health, retirement, or related benefits, except those required by law + This appointment will accrue 0.034 hours of sick leave for every hour worked + This temporary position cannot extend past a maximum of 12 months, however, the anticipated end date is August 31, 2026 What We Can Offer The hourly rate for this position ranges from $54.33 - $56.73/hour.
