Job Title: Cage Wash Technician Job Description The Cage Wash Technician cleans, sanitizes, and sterilizes animal cages and accessories using mechanical washers and autoclaves, ensuring a continuous supply of clean equipment to support animal care and research activities. This role maintains daily cleanliness and biosecurity in the cage wash area, performs routine preventive maintenance on equipment, and supports facility operations through inventory management, equipment transport, and other assigned tasks. The position offers the opportunity to grow within a large animal research core environment. Responsibilities + Comprehend and follow standard operating procedures and guidelines to ensure personnel safety and maintain biosecurity while working in the cage wash area. + Wear the required personal protective equipment at all times in accordance with institutional and facility guidelines. + Process cages and cage accessories using mechanical washers and autoclaves, ensuring proper sanitation and sterilization. + Use temperature-sensitive indicators to verify effective sanitation and sterilization, and promptly report any equipment or process failures to supervisory staff and facility engineers. + Operate and use rack washers and autoclaves to sanitize and sterilize animal cages, racks, and related equipment. + Deliver clean cages and cage accessories to animal holding areas and retrieve used items for processing, ensuring a steady supply based on cage-change schedules and user demands. + Maintain inventory of cages, accessories, and supplies on the clean/sterile side of the cage wash area, animal feed rooms, and other designated storage areas as directed by the supervisor. + Perform routine preventive maintenance on washers, autoclaves, racks, automatic watering systems, and other caging equipment to support reliable operation. + Ensure daily cleanliness in the cage wash area by cleaning and sanitizing floors, walls, equipment, and other surfaces as required by the supervisor. + Prepare and use disinfecting and sanitizing solutions according to established procedures and safety guidelines. + Remain familiar with vivarium emergency response procedures and follow them as needed. + Assist operations and facility management with inventory control, equipment transportation, pest control and monitoring, and other duties as assigned. Essential Skills + Ability to read, understand, and follow standard operating procedures and safety guidelines. + Strong attention to detail when operating washers, autoclaves, and related equipment to ensure proper sanitation and sterilization. + Prior experience working in a fast-paced environment. + Prior experience with cleaning tasks or working with animals. + Strong documentation skills for recording processes, maintenance activities, and any issues encountered. + Ability to stand and work on feet for long hours. + Ability to safely handle disinfecting and sanitizing solutions and follow biosecurity practices. + High school diploma or equivalent. Additional Skills & Qualifications + Associate or bacheloru2019s degree in Animal Science is a plus. + Experience or interest in animal science, animal husbandry, or husbandry-related work. + Experience working in a vivarium, research facility, or similar environment is beneficial. + Mechanical aptitude for performing preventive maintenance on washers, autoclaves, racks, and automatic watering systems. + Willingness to maintain required training and certifications as specified by the institution. + Interest in long-term career growth within a large animal research core. Work Environment This role is based in a large animal research core facility with a dedicated cage wash area and vivarium environment. The technician works primarily with mechanical washers, rack washers, autoclaves, automatic watering systems, and other caging equipment, handling cages, racks, and related accessories throughout the day. The position follows a four-day work schedule, Monday through Thursday, from 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The work involves standing and being on oneu2019s feet for extended periods, working in a fast-paced setting, and regularly handling cleaning agents and disinfectants while wearing appropriate personal protective equipment. The facility emphasizes cleanliness, biosecurity, and adherence to safety procedures, providing opportunities for long-term growth and development within the animal research operations. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Columbus, OH. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $18.00/hr.
