Job Type: Support Staff - Union- Bargaining Unit: TWU - Lamont- Regular/Temporary: Regular- Hours Per Week: 40- Salary Range: $23.91 p/h-$23.91 p/hThe salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.Position SummaryThe Lamont Mechanic Trainee works alongside a Lamont Mechanic and/or Lamont Assistant Mechanic while being trained to perform maintenance and repair functions at Lamont set forth in the Lamont Mechanic job description. Pursuant to training, the Lamont Mechanic Trainee is expected to perform tasks with minimal supervision, and work independently on tasks for which he/she has been trained.Responsibilities- The Lamont Mechanic Trainee will assist in all maintenance and repair functions, including grounds keeping, snow and ice removal, general construction, utility repairs, heavy cleaning, and related duties as assigned.- Handles and transports on-campus universal waste to central storage area for disposal. Must successfully complete required safety and regulatory compliance training, and conform to all requirements on the job.- Must report to work and work overtime as directed by supervisory staff to support emergency operations including, but not limited to, snow removal.- Performs other duties as assigned.Minimum Qualifications- High School Diploma, GED or equivalent required.Preferred Qualifications- Must demonstrate aptitude for Mechanic duties.- Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.- Must be physically fit to do extensive walking, stair climbing, lifting (50 lbs), moving heavy objects with assistive devices, and overhead work.- Must be able to drive utility vehicles and operate groundskeeping machinery.- Must be able to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedures manuals.- Must be trustworthy and responsible, able to communicate effectively, possess teamwork skills, and represent the department appropriately to its constituents.- Must provide current and updated home & cell phone numbers.- Must be available to respond to any emergency on a 24-hour basis, and to work overtime as directed.Equal Opportunity Employer / Disability / Veteran Columbia University is committed to the hiring of qualified local residents.
